Thomas J. Reigstad, professor emeritus of English, published the article “The Buffalo Courier-Express Mural: A 90-Year Journey” in the summer 2020 issue of Western New York Heritage magazine, Western New York’s illustrated history quarterly 23 (2): 54–63. The article tells the story of the iconic mural that hung in the lobby of the Courier-Express building at Main and Goodell streets from 1930 until 1989, when it was donated—in need of repair—to Buffalo State. The college has kept it in storage for over 30 years.

Gerald Mead, ’85, ’86, lecturer in the Art and Design Department, received an honorary doctor of fine arts from Niagara University during its virtual commencement ceremony on Sunday, July 26, at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony was livestreamed on NU's commencement website.

Jonathan Seinen, Assistant Professor, Theater

Jonathan Seinen, assistant professor of theater, has received the John Hirsch Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts. The biennial prize is awarded to “new and developing theater directors who have demonstrated great potential for future excellence and exciting artistic vision.” Directing primarily through independent companies such as Architect Theatre, Saga Collectif, lemonTree creations, and Boys in Chairs Collective, Seinen is also an actor, playwright, and producer. His work includes Black Boys, Access Me, and Iphigenia and the Furies (On Taurian Land), which was nominated for seven Dora Awards. He also directed Hamlet in a Calgary community hall and Deathwatch in a Toronto art gallery basement. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta, the National Theatre School of Canada, and Columbia University, where he earned his master of fine arts in 2020 and where he directed Cabaret, Our Town, and The Seagull. He will join the Buffalo State Theater Department faculty this fall.

Daniel Cunningham, professor of mathematics, has been notified that his paper "A Diamond-Plus Principle Consistent with AD'' now appears in the latest paginated issue of the Archive for Mathematical Logic 59 (5-6): 755–775 (August 2020). This refereed journal publishes research papers on mathematical logic and set theory.

Lorna Pérez, associate professor of English, edited the summer 2020 special issue of Label Me Latina/o, a journal of twentieth- and twenty-first century Latino literary production. The special issue, "(Un)Natural Disasters: Sites of Resistance," features work by prominent Latino literary critics and writers.

Label me Latina/o is indexed by the MLA International Bibliography, is listed in the MLA Directory of Periodicals, and is a member of Latinoamericana: Asociación de revistas académicas en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales. The articles are discoverable on EBSCOhost research databases.

Maria C. Garrity, Senior Systems Programmer, Information Technology

Maria C. Garrity '86, '93, senior systems programmer and analyst in Information Technology, successfully completed the CIO Leadership Academy in the Aspiring Leader track, achieving her certification for coursework from the SUNY SAIL Institute in Albany. She was awarded a full scholarship to attend the academy. Ms. Garrity worked diligently on assignments over the semester and completed the applied learning project "How the Information Technology Strategic Plan Works with the Buffalo State Strategic Plan." She presented virtually on May 12, 2020, at the Capstone Graduation ceremony. Additionally, she developed a presentation on leadership from what she learned at the academy called "To Aspire or Not to Aspire: That Is the Leadership Question" and presented it to her peers at the SUNY Technology Conference on June 16, 2020. She has also been nominated for InfoTech WNY's 2020 BETAS (Buffalo Emerging Technology Awards Showcase) “Educator in Technology” award for her excellence in teaching in her technology field as an adjunct faculty member in the CIS Department.

Christopher Weber, Instructional Media Technician, Information Technology Services

Christopher Weber, instructional media technician in Information Technology Services, successfully achieved Crestron's first-of-its-kind master technology architect certification on June 23. To be eligible for the MTA exam, candidates were required to participate in over 20 hours of rigorous interactive online training through the month of May. The coursework included study in user interface and experience theory, AV over IP networking, unified communications design, environmental systems integration, and best practices for large scale system deployment.

Arjun K. Pathak, assistant professor of physics, published the peer-reviewed scientific article "Unprecedented Generation of 3D Heterostructures by Mechanochemical Disassembly and Re-ordering of Incommensurate Metal Chalcogenides" in Nature Communications 11, 3005 (2020), one of the highly reputed high-impact factor journals published by Nature Research, UK. The article reports the creation of 3-D heterostructures materials that have novel quantum phenomena for future high-efficiency devices. Dr. Pathak has an equal contribution to this work with the first author of the article.

Buffalo State College's Center for China Studies conducted its first and second online seminars, titled “Multidisciplinary Research Seminar of the Visiting Scholars,” on May 29 and June 5. The COVID-19 pandemic made the conventional conference impossible, and the virtual seminar was realized with Zoom. Seven visiting scholars reported their recent research conducted at Buffalo State during the two seminars. It was an opportunity for scholars of different disciplines to learn more about each other's research and possibilities in collaboration. A third and final seminar for the summer will be convened Friday, June 12.
