Joy Guarino, professor of theater, has received the 2019 Outstanding Dance Educator (Postsecondary) Award from the New York State Dance Education Association (NYSDEA). This award acknowledges a stellar dance educator from the NYSDEA membership with an established record of teaching dance in the postsecondary sector. She will receive the award at the annual National Dance Education Organization conference, held in Miami, Florida, October 23–26.

Dan MacIsaac, Associate Professor, Physics

Dan MacIsaac, associate professor of physics, completed a competitive, merit-based international teaching and research fellowship at the Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg University of Education Department of Physics in Heidelberg, Germany, from May 26 through July 2. He taught a graduate seminar in physics education, Powerful Ideas and Quantitative Thinking in Electricity and Magnetism, and gave three public lectures: "Modeling Physics in the U.S.," "An Introduction to Research on Physics Teacher Preparation for Teachers," and "Democratizing Classroom Interaction and Improving Learning Effectiveness." The last lecture was part of the "Bildung bitte!" series and was co-presented by Kathleen Falconer. MacIsaac also collected data exploring the teaching of electric circuits to blind children at a specialist school in Ilvesheim for future publication. An overview of his work as the fifth fellow, and that of previous fellows, can be found on the International Fellowship Program website.

Roger Firestien, adjunct associate professor in the Center for Studies in Creativity, has published a new book, Create in a Flash, representing his 40 years of work in the field of deliberate creativity and creative problem solving. Dr. Firestien will host a presentation and book signing on Thursday, September 19, at 6:00 at the Buffalo Museum of Science, 1020 Humboldt Parkway, in Buffalo.

Ted Schmidt, professor of economics and finance, published "The Process of Endogenous Liquidity in Developing Economies: The Case of Mexico" in the Review of Keynesian Economics 7(3): 369–387. The paper is coauthored with Professor Alfredo Castillo Polanco from the Universidad de Quintana Roo, Chetumal, Mexico.

The paper has been selected by the editors as one of two free access access articles and is available at elgaronline.com.

Nancy Weekly, head of collections and Charles Cary Rumsey curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, was interviewed by arts journalist Judith H. Dobrzynski, whose review of the current exhibition Charles E. Burchfield: Transitions was published in the Wall Street Journal August 21.

Dobrzynski, an independent arts journalist from New York with a long-standing interest in Burchfield’s landscape paintings, approached the Journal about writing the piece. She traveled to Buffalo for a private preview of the works, and then toured the exhibition and interviewed Weekly, the exhibition’s organizer. A Burchfield scholar, Weekly also teaches museum studies courses in the History and Social Studies Education Department at Buffalo State.

Dobrzynski's review includes images of Burchfield’s Oncoming Spring; Clearing Sky; View from Our Front Porch at Salem, Ohio; and February Dusk as well as Appleton’s 1950 portrait of Burchfield. A later photo of Burchfield painting in his studio is included online.

Charles E. Burchfield: Transitions is on view through December 1.

Tom Giambrone, professor emeritus of mathematics, and Paul Schwiegerling, lecturer of mathematics, will be inducted into the New York State Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame during a formal ceremony on November 14 at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester, New York. The Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame is sponsored by the New York State Association of Mathematics Supervisors (NYSAMS), a professional organization for mathematics educators. Founded in 1969, NYSAMS focuses on topics and trends in mathematics, supervision, and communication.

Dan MacIsaac, associate professor of physics, and Buffalo State alumna Amanda Dolan, ’15, M.S.Ed. physics education, published their paper, “Analyzing the Mechanics of Women's Roller Derby to Engage Introductory Physics Students,” in the Science Teachers Association of New York State’s Science Teacher Bulletin 82 (2): 6–23. The paper, including photos of physics demonstrations by Roc City Roller Derby athletes, is available on the STANYS website.

N. John Popovich, associate professor and chair of the Career and Technical Education Department, was awarded the Sidney Platt ACTEA Medallion of Honor from the Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators at its annual conference (PDF, 1 MB), held April 10–12 in Albany, New York. The award is given to those who further the aims and objectives of career and technical education programs for New York State residents. Dr. Popovich, who started at Buffalo State in 1974, was recognized for his commitment to high-quality programming across New York State.
