Tell Students: Workshops to Success - Truss Analysis: Method of Joints vs. Method of Sections

If you’re taking or reviewing mechanics this semester, this workshop is for you! We will go over a detailed example of both the method of joints and the method of sections and discuss how to choose the appropriate method to solve your truss analysis problem. This workshop is intended for engineering technology students, but all are welcome. Registration is not required, but we appreciate knowing how many people to expect. If you’re planning to attend, please call ext.4041 and let us know.

What if there were shortcuts, some tricks to make it easier to expand your vocabulary and turn yourself into a veritable walking dictionary? You’ll discover such tricks if you attend the enlightening "Vocabulary Building: Demystifying the Mystery of Words," the next session in the Workshops to Success series sponsored by the Academic Skills Center of University College and offered free to Buffalo State students. Instructor-tutor Anne Marie Golaszewski shows you how to crack meanings out of arcane and recondite words so you can impress your friends and complete the most difficult crossword puzzles.

NYS Teacher of the Year Presents 'Be the Spark: The Importance of Belief in Education'

Katie Ferguson, 2012 New York State Teacher of the Year, will present "Be the Spark: The Importance of Belief in Education" from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.

How does an inner-city child, the third-oldest of seven children, become the 2012 New York State Teacher of the Year? In this one-hour presentation, Ferguson will describe her life lessons and beliefs that helped her earn this honor. She will also provide insight into her teaching philosophy and how she endeavors to be a model of belief, both in her classroom and in her everyday life.

New Horizons: Fulbright Connects to a World Education

Any student, faculty, or staff member interested in the multiple possibilities offered by the Fulbright program is welcome to attend the fall seminar of the Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association, which will be held at Nazareth College, in Rochester, New York, on Friday, October 5, from noon to 3:30 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Sylvia Crowder, acting deputy assistant secretary for international and foreign language education with the U.S. Department of Education.

Professional Development: Making Course Content Accessible - Graphs, Images, and Charts

Federal legislation requires that all course materials posted online or in a learning management system such as ANGEL be accessible for students with disabilities. This hands-on session will focus on how to provide textual alternatives to nontextual content such as graphs, images, and charts. Bring a flash drive with graphs, images, charts, or tables from your content area. Presented by Meghan Pereira, Sumana Silverheels, and Beth Burns on Tuesday, October 9, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. and repeated on Friday, October 26, from 10:00 to 11:15 a.m. in E. H. Professional Development: Conference on Active and Integrative Teaching and Learning

Would you like to learn more about active and integrative learning? You are invited to attend Niagara University’s 2013 Conference on Teaching and Learning on January 7 and 8.

The Faculty Development Office will sponsor up to 12 faculty members to attend the conference. Faculty members will be sponsored on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who are sponsored by the university must agree to participate in a presentation to other Buffalo State faculty members. This presentation will be a discussion format, with each attendee sharing something that he or she learned at the conference.
