Parked in Lot M or G? Hop a Ride to Lot C on the MGC Direct!

Posted:

Just a reminder that University Police offers a free express shuttle service connecting students, faculty, and staff who park in lots along Rockwell Road and Letchworth Street to the center of campus.

The “MGC Direct” picks up riders in Lots M and G and takes them directly to Lot C—also known as the Cleveland Hall circle—from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on days when classes are in session. The van is clearly marked as a Buffalo State escort van.

Lot M pickup locations are at blue-light phones 34 and 42, while riders from Lot G can catch the shuttle on the north side of the maintenance barn. USG has generously donated shelters for riders while they wait for the van.

University Police continues to offer the overnight escort shuttle van, which operates from 4:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. seven days a week when classes are in session. The evening shuttle picks up and drops off riders at blue-light phones in campus parking lots and along perimeter roads.

Please refer to this campus map outlining the escort van routes.

Call for Submissions: 13th Annual Faculty and Staff Research and Creativity Fall Forum

Posted:

The 13th annual Faculty and Staff Research and Creativity Fall Forum will be held on Thursday, October 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Houston Gymnasium (please note new location).

The goal of the forum is to develop, encourage, and support Buffalo State faculty and staff research and creativity, and to make collaborative research endeavors and grantsmanship more accessible. This is an excellent opportunity to network with other Buffalo State faculty and staff members and to identify common scholarly and creative interests you may have.

All faculty and staff members are invited to organize an exhibit to present current research, creative activities, or other scholarship. Individual, departmental, or group exhibits are welcome. President Podolefsky declared the 2012–2013 academic year as the "Year of the City," highlighting the unique fact that Buffalo State is the only SUNY four-year comprehensive institution located in a city. This theme is an opportunity to celebrate our mission as an institution that serves the city, while bringing greater public recognition to Buffalo State’s wide-ranging educational programs and research with urban emphases, as well as the university’s extensive community-engagement initiatives.

If your submission relates to or supports the Year of the City theme, please include it in the box on the submission form so that we may highlight it in the program.

To participate, please complete the online form. Titles and abstracts are to be submitted electronically by Friday, September 28 (deadline extended).

Public Lecture: 'Lynching - America's "National Crime" from a Global Perspective'

Posted:

Manfred Berg, Curt Engelhorn Professor of American History at the University of Heidelberg, will present "Lynching: America's 'National Crime' from a Global Perspective" on Thursday, October 4, at 12:15 p.m. in Classroom Building B118.

In 1905, the American sociologist James E. Cutler called lynching "our country's national crime." Since the 1980s, historians have produced numerous studies of lynching in America in general and of African Americans in the South in particular, but they have only recently begun to put the American experience into a broader international perspective. In his talk, Berg will invoke a global comparative perspective to shed new light on the American practice.

Berg is a specialist in African American history. He wrote the first history of the NAACP in German, which has been translated into English as The Ticket to Freedom: The NAACP and the Struggle for Black Political Integration (University Press of Florida, 2005). He is also the author of Popular Justice: A History of Lynching in America (Ivan R. Dee, 2011).

Midterm Grades Fall 2012

Posted:

The midterm grading window will open in Banner at 9:00 a.m. Monday, October 1, and close at 9:00 p.m. Sunday, October 21. In addition to an estimated midterm grade, faculty can note how regularly a student has attended a course by entering 0 (never attended), 1 (sporadic, unsatisfactory attendance), or 2 (consistent, satisfactory attendance) in the “Hours Attended” field.

Although all faculty members can provide midterm feedback for any of their students in Banner, the Early Intervention Program (EIP) seeks information on particular student populations. Faculty members with EIP students in their courses will receive a list of students requiring midterm feedback. Your comments concerning attendance and performance are deeply appreciated and quite helpful to us in our academic intervention efforts. Students will be able to view their grades in Banner after 9:00 p.m. on October 21.

Should you have questions or concerns, please call ext. 5222 or e-mail maldonhd@buffalostate.edu. Thank you for your commitment to our students’ success.
