In celebration of Black History Month, the International Student Affairs Office (Jean Gounard, director) and the African and African American Studies Interdisciplinary Unit (Aimable Twagilimana, coordinator) present lectures on "The African Diaspora and the Francophone World" and "The Negritude Movement and the African Diaspora,” Tuesday, February 8, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210. This event is free and open to the public.

Health and Wellness Students Offer Free Health Screenings

Did you know that your mental health and physical well-being are strongly connected? As a component of Mental Health Awareness Week, students from the Health and Wellness Department's program planning course will be offering free health screenings for students, staff, and faculty, Tuesday March 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union lower lobby.

The students have had experience conducting screenings across the region.

Blood pressure, grip strength, sit-n-reach flexibility, body fat/BMI, three-minute step test, portion control education, and diabetes paper/pencil screening will be offered.

Eric Weaver: Mental Health Awareness Week Keynote Speaker

Eric Weaver, a retired police sergeant, will discuss "Overcoming the Darkness: Perspectives on Mental Health, Mental Illness, Suicide Awareness and Prevention," today, Monday, March 7, at 12:30 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210.

Weaver will openly, honestly, and frankly discuss how his life was riddled with personal struggles and trials, as well as severe battles with stress, depression, self-destructive and suicidal behavior. Weaver puts over 23 years of professional and personal experience into these dynamic presentations, and provides a real-life, "no-nonsense" approach to issues of mental health, mental illness, symptoms of stress and depression, stigmas, communication skills, recovery, suicide awareness and prevention. 

In addition, he will talk about the vulnerability of minority populations in regards to mental health and target his keynote to a student, faculty, and staff audience.

Eric will talk for an hour and be available for private conversations afterwards. 
 Co-sponsored by the Association of Staff and Faculty of African Descent and the Counseling Center. This is a worthwhile presentation, join the conversation.

Poets Paul White and Loren Keller at the Burchfield Penney

This Sunday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m., the Burchfield Penney Writers and Poets Series presents Paul White and Loren Keller.

Paul began writing over thirty years ago, as part of a survival strategy, after a difficult period of illness in his own life. He has attended workshops at the Palm Beach Poetry Festival and at the Sarah Lawrence Summer Seminar for Writers. His teachers have been Thomas Lux , Gregory Orr, Stephen Dobyns, Stuart Dischell, and Marie Howe.

Loren Keller was born in Lancaster and has always lived in the Buffalo area. After serving three years as an infantry lieutenant in the Korean War, he graduated from Buffalo State, won prizes for his poetry and essays, and began to build his book collection. He continued his education (and his collecting) at Cornell, Canisius, UB, and in California. He taught for 31 years as a teacher of literature, English, and humanities and as a department chair in the Kenmore public schools.

In celebration of Black History Month, the Anne Frank Project and the African and African American Studies Interdisciplinary Unit present "Finding Anne Frank in Rwanda: A Diary of Shared Humanity" by professor Drew Kahn (director, the Anne Frank Project; chair and professor, Theater Department), Thursday, February 17, during Bengal Pause (12:15-1:30 p.m.) in Bulger Communication Center East 2.

Kahn will share stories of his travels to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in January 2011.
