CERT Refresher Training: Building Search and Evacuation Procedures

Posted:

A workshop, Friday April 1, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210, will demonstrate building search and evacuation procedures in response to a threat incident. The first hour will cover the classroom material on the tactics involved, while the second hour will be a tactical exercise for our team.

Half of the team will act as victims/students, while the other half will be the CERT members acting on instructions from team leaders and UPD. The team will assign roles, perform the search, and then safely extricate any victims/report on suspicious devices discovered. We hope to have some members of the ATFE or Erie county bomb squad on hand to offer their expertise on the activities.

Register online.

Concept of Blasphemy Interfaith Symposium

Posted:

A cloud of ambiguity and controversy surrounds the concept of blasphemy, in particular, its punishment. Capital punishment is considered a fitting penalty for committing blasphemy by some. What does blasphemy mean in different faiths? What do religious scriptures say about reacting to the act and the person committing blasphemy? Invited speakers belonging to Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and Sikhism will discuss the subject based on teachings derived from their sacred texts at the Concept of Blasphemy Interfaith Symposium, Sunday, March 13, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Millennium Airport Hotel, 2040 Walden Avenue, Cheektowaga.

At 2:30 p.m., Allen Podet, professor of religious studies, Philosophy and Humanities Department, will discuss Judaism’s approach to blasphemy.
