Take Back The Night 2009: Do Something!

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Take Back the Night at Buffalo State College. Take Back The Night is an event dedicated to giving a voice back to survivors of sexual violence. Last year, over 300 students, faculty, and staff attended this amazing event. This year we will have performances by Tha Ink Club, Casting Hall, and a special musical performance by two very talented Buffalo State Students. In addition, we will have two survivors of sexual violence speak about their experiences. Event will take place Friday, April 24, 6:30–9:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall. Physics/Chemistry Seminar: Angular Momentum in Planetary Atmospheres

Professor Jude Sabato of the Earth Sciences and Science Education Department will give the third Physics/Chemistry seminar of the semester on Thursday, April 23, at 12:30 p.m. in SC272. Professor Sabato will use the concept of angular momentum to lead a survey of current problems in the dynamics of planetary atmospheres. This will include the weather on other planets as well as on the Earth. In particular the causes of monsoons will be discussed.

ANGEL Open Forum

Bring your lunch and join us on Thursday, April 30, at noon in Bulger Communication Center 104. You supply the question, we'll supply the answer! Open to all faculty using ANGEL, regardless of your experience level. We will have an open forum for your questions and concerns and will discuss how to close out your courses from this spring and how to get ready for summer and fall using ANGEL. This is also a great time to meet and talk with other faculty using ANGEL.

Candidate Presentation: Dean, University College and Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Education

The search committee for dean of University College and associate vice president for undergraduate education invites the campus community to a presentation by candidate Scott Johnson. Dr. Johnson has been serving in the role of interim dean since June 2008. His presentation will be held on Monday, April 27, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center South 2. Biology Department Plant Sale

The Biology department will be having a plant sale on Tuesday April 28. The sale will be located in the biology greenhouse, Science Building 225, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Cacti, succulents, tropicals, vegetable seedlings, geraniums and house plants will all be available. Many large specimen will also be available.

Holly Bewlay Sings as a Soprano Soloist with the BPO

Holly Bewlay, assistant professor, Music Department, will sing as a soprano soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chorus. The event will be on Sunday, April 26, at 2:30 p.m. at Kleinhans Music Hall. This will be Dr. Bewlay's debut performance with the BPO and will include Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 2 and the overture to "Midsummer's Night's Dream." Tickets are available through the BPO box office (885-5000).

Matchmaking 4 Scholarship

Matchmaking 4 Scholarship, Thursday, May 14, 12:15-1:30 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 314 is the third of four workshops created to assist faculty through the publishing process. In this workshop, we will further explore the relationship between scholar and publisher. We will review a great tip sheet (PDF) from the Council of Editors of Learned Journals and will schedule research appointments for this summer.

SUNY Grants for Explorations in Diversity and Academic Excellence

The SUNY Office of Diversity and Educational Equity invites applications for grants to support innovative approaches that illuminate and strengthen the intersections between diversity and academic excellence. The award grants will be up to $10,000 to support campus-based projects for the period July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010. Projects eligible for funding include, but are not limited to, improving the campus environment, access and success for students, course development and pedagogical innovations, conferences and symposia, film and speaker series, recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, campus-community dialogues, and campus surveys that can be used to further any of the above.
