The Frances Tyau Scholarship Fund was established in 1978 when Professor Frances Tyau donated $1,000 in honor of her father's 91st birthday. Since then, over $50,000 has been donated to the endowed scholarship, and the majority of these gifts were under $100. In fact, many of the gifts have been under $5.

Recipients of the 2007 Awards for Equity and Campus Diversity

The President's Council on Equity and Campus Diversity is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2007 Awards for Promotion of Respect for Diversity and Individual Differences. The awards are given to recognize those faculty, staff, and programs that have made special efforts to increase respect for diversity and individual difference through classroom discussions, curricular and co-curricular experiences, or projects and activities that go above and beyond what is usually expected as part of their regular job expectations, teaching assignments, or responsibilities. Awardees are selected from nominations received from students, faculty, and staff who prepare a written statement to support the nomination.

Commencement Marchers May Still Register

The Commencement Committee wishes to remind the campus community that the 135th Commencement is Saturday, May 12. Baccalaureate ceremonies are held at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Master's Hooding and C.A.S. Ceremony takes place at 6:00 p.m. Faculty and professional staff are still welcome to register to march in any one or more ceremonies of their choice to congratulate their graduating students. What Do All the Purple Ribbons Represent?

The purple ribbons on campus are a symbol of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Call Tammy Kresge at ext. 6725 for the many activities happening, including the Clothesline Project at the Student Union today, Take Back the Night this evening at 6:30 in the Social Hall, and a Day of Conversation May 4 in Bulger Communication Center. Secretary to the Vice President for Finance and Management Search Announced

The Vice President for Finance and Management's Office is conducting an internal search to fill the position of secretary 2, which serves as the vice president’s secretary. This is a noncompetitive confidential civil service position for which no civil service exam is required. The chair of the search committee, Barbara Meyer, will be accepting applications until Monday, May 7. Please refer to the vacancy announcement on the Human Resource Management Web site.

Classified employees may change the way in which they are currently being paid for holiday work. If an employee wishes to make a change, they may download the Holiday Waiver Form from the Human Resource Management Web site and submit it to the Payroll Office by Tuesday, May 15.

Getting Started in Second Life Workshops

The Research Foundation at Buffalo State College is sponsoring a virtual island in Second Life (SL), a virtual 3-D world for research, teaching, and creativity exploration. The Second Life Education page explains that Second Life provides a unique and flexible environment for educators interested in distance learning, computer-supported collaborative work (on a local to global level), simulation, new media studies, and corporate training. The ability to conceptualize, design, develop, research, and simulate in 3-D virtual reality applications are highly valued professional skills that are currently emerging in a variety of educational disciplines.

Faculty and Staff Support the Burchfield-Penney Art Center New Museum Project

Did you notice the white beam on the west side of the new museum for the Burchfield-Penney with the Buffalo State College flag blowing in the wind? The beam, a 40-foot-long steel girder, was painted white so friends of the project could sign the beam before it was ceremonially lifted into place last week. And among the signatories were members of the Buffalo State College community.
