Biology Seminar: 'Ren-expressing Cell Lineage during Development, Neoplasia, and Injury' - September 22

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department for the seminar "Pictures at an Exhibition: Confetti Vignettes and Some Insights into Ren-expressing Cell Lineage during Development, Neoplasia, and Injury," presented by Kenneth W. Gross, chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and director of the Gene Targeting and Transgenic Shared Resource at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, on Monday, September 22, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Technology Building 160.

All faculty, staff, and students are welcome.

Seminar Abstract
Renin is classically associated with the juxtaglomerular cell of the kidney and the regulation of systemic blood pressure through its participation in the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS). From research over the past two decades, however, it has become apparent that the RAS is a signaling system that more generally serves to facilitate intracellular communication in a wide spectrum of organs and physiological contexts. Kenneth Gross has spent much of his research career pursuing an understanding of the transcriptional regulation of the renin gene at its classical juxtaglomerular cell expression site. During the course of these studies, he has developed a panoply of molecular genetic tools that he has used in transgenic studies. In today's lecture, he will demonstrate how one can use some of the more recently developed  tools to explore individual cell decision events in normal development and pathophysiological situations like neoplasia and organ injury.
