Retirement Celebration for Mark Bausili: April 30

You are invited to a retirement reception for registrar Mark Bausili on Thursday, April 30, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Moot Hall 110, the Admissions Office conference room.

Mark Bausili has served as the registrar at Buffalo State for almost 30 years. He has played an important role in serving the campus and guiding the office through the successful implementations and updates of technology and data to improve our service to students, faculty, and staff members. Please stop by and wish him well in his new endeavors.

Panel Discussion: Women and Gender Studies in Action: How Our Alumni Are Making Buffalo Better – April 23

How can pursuing a minor help students get a good job and make a difference in the world? Please join us for the panel discussion "Women and Gender Studies in Action: How Our Alumni Are Making Buffalo Better" on Thursday, April 23, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Butler Library 210. Three women and gender studies (WGS) alumnae who are doing innovative work to improve the community will discuss their jobs and how they use the knowledge and skills they gained from the WGS minor to succeed. The panelists will be Moira Madden from Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York, Samantha Nephew from PUSH Buffalo, and Emily Terrana from the New York Civil Liberties Union. This event is open to all members of the Buffalo State community.

Speakers will represent the New York Civil Liberties Union, PUSH Buffalo, and Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York. Please encourage students to attend.

The submission form will be off-line today from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. during the publication's move to the Drupal content management system. After 3:00 p.m. today, submissions will be accepted for Wednesday, April 22, and beyond.

Please join us for the next Tech Talk, "Branding Yourself, and Your Research, Using Buffalo State Digital Commons," with Maureen Lindstrom, scholarly communications librarian, and Fred Bristol, adviser and marketing specialist with the Small Business Development Center, on Friday, April 24, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in Butler Library 314.

The Digital Commons at Buffalo State is a hosted, online institutional repository that allows our campus community to preserve, share, and market scholarship, research, and creative activities. Content in the Digital Commons is optimized for web searching and is freely available to view and download from anywhere in the world.

This workshop will demonstrate how to upload content into our Digital Commons and the importance of marketing your scholarship with Buffalo State to maximize impact and readership of your work

Using Open Source Tools to Create Media in the Visual Arts – April 24

Please join us for the next Tech Talk, "Using Open Source Tools to Create Media in the Visual Arts," on Friday, April 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in South Wing B26.

Many free and open source software applications are approaching the quality and capabilities of commercial and industry grade software like Adobe's Creative Suite. Brent Patterson, assistant professor of design, will showcase open source software that is mature enough to compete with Adobe products. Free and open source software such as Blender (3-D modeling and rendering), Gimp (image manipulation), Inkscape (vector-based image editing), and Scribus (a desktop publishing application) will be presented and discussed. These tools can be used to create a wide range of multimedia high-resolution images, including photography, desktop publications, video editing, sound design, web design, 3-D animation, video game design, and data visualization.

Spring 'Artists on the Road' Series Concludes with Alice Pennisi: April 23

Alice Pennisi, associate professor of art education, will present “Feeling Most at Home while Traveling” on Thursday, April 23, at 12:20 p.m. in Upton Hall 230, the final talk in the spring 2015 series “Artists on the Road: Travel as a Source of Inspiration.” Pennisi's talk, which is free and open to the public, will feature her extended travel to the Netherlands, Singapore, and Indonesia.

Pennisi said she “often feels most at home when in the place where she is packing to leave.” She will also touch on a few other places she has visited, particularly experiences and events she's witnessed that have affected her as an educator and artist. Please attend and encourage your students to attend as well.

This event is co-sponsored by the Design Department and the International and Exchange Programs Office.
