Kylie Angell: One Voice Is Enough - October 20

Posted:

The I Love Consent campaign is pleased to sponsor a talk by Kylie Angell, "One Voice Is Enough: How to Empower Yourself in the Fight Against Rape Culture," on Tuesday, October 20, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall.

Angell, 25, graduated from the University of Connecticut (UConn) in Storrs, Connecticut, on the Dean's List with a bachelor of science in nursing. During college, a good friend sexually assaulted her. As part of her healing process, Angell became an activist. She refused to remain silent about her experiences, and spoke out about her story at events such as Slutwalk UConn (an event geared toward reducing victim blaming), the Vagina Monologues, and Take Back the Night.

Angell is featured in the documentary It Happened Here by Lisa F. Jackson as well as the Pact Four Front Documentary Slutwalk: A Day in Her Heels. She has spoken at Harvard Law, Vassar College, and the Annual Women's Arts SWAN Day. She has also interviewed for the WHUS Radio Show "Full Frontal Feminism," spoken on the Katie Couric Show, and shared her testimony on a panel at New Jersey City University.

Affordability Initiative: Faculty and Student Textbook Survey

Posted:

Have you completed the textbook survey? We value your opinions. Affordability and accessibility for students are important SUNY-wide initiatives and a potentially important aspect of student retention. Instructional Resources and Butler Library are conducting a study to explore the correlations between the cost, format, and availability of educational materials and student academic behavior. The study will also explore student and faculty preferences and experiences relating to educational materials.

The survey will give us valuable data about student behavior as well as student and faculty preferences that we can use to focus our affordability efforts on campus. If you have not yet participated in this research study, please complete the survey. Please encourage your students to take the student survey using the link on the Blackboard home page.

Questions can be directed to Ginger Bidell, instructional designer, 878-3688. Thank you.

Call for Nominations: Undergraduate and Graduate Student Awards

Posted:

Members of the campus community are invited to submit nominations for the following student awards:

President’s Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate and Graduate Student
One undergraduate student and one graduate student will be awarded the President’s Medal. The President’s Medal is the highest honor awarded to a student by Buffalo State College. This award is given to a student who, through use of his or her natural talents and acquired skills, has demonstrated a commitment toward meeting the goals of higher education as set forth in the university’s mission statement. The recipients will deliver the student address at Commencement. A grade point average of at least 3.5 is required for consideration for this award. Only students graduating in December 2015, May 2016, or August 2016 will be considered.*

SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence
The Chancellor’s Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a student by SUNY. This award recognizes model students who have integrated academic excellence with achievement in areas such as athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, entrepreneurship, leadership, and career achievement. Although there is no prescribed grade point average for this award, it is assumed that recipients will have high academic achievement. Award recipients will be recognized at a spring ceremony in Albany and at Commencement. Only students graduating between June 2015 and May 2016 will be considered.*

Nominations are being sought for both awards. Students must be nominated by a faculty or staff member at Buffalo State. Candidates must have demonstrated the qualities recognized by each award. Selection criteria are similar for each award; however, to be considered for the President’s Medal, a grade point average of 3.5 or higher is required. A student may be nominated for either or both awards.

Selection Criteria for Both Awards
Academic Performance: Documented via grade point average, honors received, rank in class, research, and other scholarly projects.

Citizenship: As measured by university and community service, the quality of extracurricular activities, and/or involvement in professional organizations.

Leadership/Creativity: Documented local, state, national, or international recognition for excellence (e.g., recipient of major national scholarships or athletic awards, or recognition by national and international associations and honor societies).

For graduate students: documented by activities related to the discipline of graduate degree program or other university service leadership in a professional organization, or community outreach activities related to the field of study.

More information and nomination materials are available on the Student Life website.

Nominations and supporting documentation must be delivered to the Student Affairs Office, Cleveland Hall 519, by 4:00 p.m. Monday, December 21.

Those with questions or concerns regarding the application process are encouraged to call Kathy Marzolf at 878-4704.

AFP Presents Mirror/Rorrim: October 8, 15

Posted:

Mirror/Rorrim, the latest original play created by Buffalo State and Anne Frank Project students, will be presented on Thursday, October 8, and Thursday, October 15, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Savage Theater.

Following their trip to Rwanda in January 2015, 12 students processed their experience through the creation of a new play inspired in Rwanda, developed at Buffalo State, and delivered to local Buffalo schools in fall 2015. Mirror/Rorrim follows Anna, a teenage girl who is filled with self-hate and personal judgment, as she is pulled into a fantastic journey that reveals her inner secrets and leads her to learn to love her own story. The 30-minute performance will be followed by a 40-minute workshop activating the lessons of the play.

This is not a ticketed event. Arrive early to get a seat.
