Colleagues and corn-festers,
Between gift certificates and clever baskets, we have an abundance of raffle items for this year's PSC Corn Fest on Wednesday, July 20. To expedite matters, if you would like to purchase sheets of raffle tickets (NOT 50/50)  in advance at $5 a sheet, please contact Terri Locher, facilities procurement coordinator, 878-5012.

The last day for $6 advance-sale Corn Fest tickets is noon on Monday, July 18. Tickets will be $8 at the door (Perry Quad or Campbell Union Social Hall if raining) on July 20. Only advance-sale ticket holders will be eligible for the surplus corn giveaway. Winners posted at registration. All ticket holders are eligible for two special door prizes to be announced at the beginning of the raffle selection. Raffle selection will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m.

We have two high-value donations this year: golf lessons (priceless!) or teeth whitening ($350 value from WNY Dental in Blasdell). Chances at $1 each; details at the Corn Fest.

Tickets for the 50/50 split will be 10 for $5 and will be offered at tables during lunch. Last year's winner bought a lovely watch.

We will be selling T-shirts for $20, and proceeds will go directly to the PSC scholarship fund. Thanks to Pam Voyer, stewardship and special projects officer in Institutional Advancement, for arranging this. These comfy cotton black shirts with an orange bengal on the side were a hit at the corporate challenge. Sizes up to 3XL.

CERT: It's Not Too Late to Join

Posted:

The Buffalo State Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is offering training for faculty and staff members who are interested in becoming CERT members. The second part of the CERT new member training (and existing member refresher), Light Search and Rescue Operations, will take place on Tuesday, July 19, at 9:00 a.m. in Butler Library 210.

If you missed the first training but are still interested in becoming a CERT member, you can attend this second part of the training and we will work with you to catch you up on what you missed.

Everyone is welcome. Future topics will include Fire Safety (August), Disaster Preparedness (September), and Terrorism (October).

The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may affect their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the three killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.

For more information, please visit the CERT website. Please register with or direct any questions to the CERT Task Force.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring for Faculty and Staff

Posted:

Weigel Health Center will offer two ambulatory blood pressure monitors to interested faculty and staff members this summer. Nearly one in five people has high blood pressure but is unaware of it. Hypertension increases the risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States, and stroke, the third leading cause of death in the United States. Take an active role in your health and get your blood pressure checked regularly. Know your numbers!

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is a technique to gauge accurate blood pressure over a 24-hour period using a monitor. The monitor can be worn on a belt or in a pouch, but the blood pressure cuff must be worn on the participant's non-dominant arm for a full 24 hours. While wearing the cuff, participants must keep their arms relatively still each time the cuff is inflating. Participants are also unable to shower or exercise while wearing the monitor.

The monitor is programmed to take readings every 20 minutes when the wearer is awake and every 60 minutes when the wearer is asleep. At the end of testing, results are downloaded and printed for the participant. The readings are very reliable, accurate to within 5 mmHg of readings taken with a manual blood pressure cuff.

Weigel Health Center is not responsible for treatment or follow-through on results but asks participants to follow up with their doctors accordingly. Weigel Health will not use the results of any tests performed for any purpose.

If you are interested in ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, please call Julie Nichols, nurse practitioner in the Weigel Health Center, at 878-6711. Testing will be scheduled Monday through Thursday only, preferably in the morning. Please wear loose-fitting clothing to the appointment. The cuff will be placed on your nondominant arm.

We look forward to seeing you and answering any questions you may have.
