Information Security Awareness: Have You Been Pwned-

Posted:

The other day I opened an e-mail from Macy's thanking me for my order of 12 lipsticks heading to Arizona. Of course I called to let them know I'd been pwned. And of course, I changed the password to my Macy's account. Given the Equifax breach and all the other breaches that either have not been reported or have been reported months after the event, please visit this website, read the directions, and enter each e-mail address you have. If pwned, change your passwords to all accounts that use that address as a login.

Please join University Police officers for the second annual Coffee with a Cop event on Wednesday, October 4, from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Campbell Student Union Retail Food Court. Coffee with a Cop brings police officers and the community members they serve together over coffee to discuss issues and learn more about each other. Attending Coffee with a Cop is an easy way for faculty, staff, and students to get to know the men and women of University Police who serve our campus community. This is a great opportunity to chat with UPD officers to ask any questions you may have. University Police at Buffalo State is partnering with Chartwells Dining Services to provide this community policing event.

Opens Tonight: 'Blood at the Root'

Posted:

The Buffalo State Theater Department and Casting Hall Productions proudly present Blood at the Root, a play written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by assistant professor of theater Aaron Moss, in the Donald Savage Building's Flexible Theatre.

When Raylynn, a young African American high school student, dares to do something no one at her school has seen before—sit under a tree unofficially designated for white students—the shocking discovery that follows uproots this community's feelings on race, sexuality, identity, and the miscarriage of justice. Based on real events surrounding the 2007 Jena Six case in Louisiana, this ensemble drama examines how a community's roots influence how they commune.

Tickets are available online, by phone at 878-3005, or in person at the Rockwell Hall Box Office.

Performances September 27, 28, 29 and October 4, 5, 6 at 8:00 p.m.; and September 30 and October 7 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

AFP 2017: Sharing Stories/Connecting Communities - Featured Artists

Posted:

The Anne Frank Project is excited to announce the schedule for its ninth annual social justice festival, AFP 2017: Sharing Stories/Connecting Communities, to be held October 3 and 4 at Buffalo State. AFP 2017 engages participants in multidisciplinary, kinesthetic learning experiences facilitated by local, national, and international scholars, artists, and activists. Look for sessions showcasing Buffalo State faculty, staff, and alumni.

Featured Performances:

Minita Gandhi in Muthaland
A dark comedy about culture, identity, spirituality, and sexuality.
Tuesday, October 3
7:00 p.m.
Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall

Michele Costa in Speak
Mask, music, moving paintings, and three compelling speeches weave themselves into a dream from which the waking is truly an awakening. The relevance to today of Charlie Chaplin's final speech from The Great Dictator (1939) and Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot (1994) is chilling. Annie Dillard's prose on identity and imperfection brings this story even closer to the heart.
Wednesday, October 4
6:45–8:00 p.m.
Campbell Student Union Social Hall

Featured Artists:

You and Me: An Installation by Fotini Galanes (PDF, 7.8 MB)
My Mark Matters, a global multifaceted story-telling project.
No one is without marks or the stories from which they came. Thus far, materials have been collected from thousands of participants representing 35 out of 196 countries. You are invited to participate in this major global installation.
October 2–19
Monday–Friday 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Czurles-Nelson Gallery, Upton Hall

Going Beyond: An Artist’s 'Hello' - An Installation by Julia Bottoms-Douglas (PFD, 6.5 MB)
Artist Julia Bottoms-Douglas uses portraiture as the means to combat the media’s stereotypical images of people of color. We are asked to consider a more accurate depiction of their beauty, grace, and intellect through contemplation of her compelling portraits. You are invited to participate by filling out a sheet with five first impressions and then, the five realities of either yourself or someone you meet in this exhibition’s space.
October 2–13
Monday–Friday 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Dr. Margaret E. Bacon Student Gallery, Upton Hall

Chemistry-Physics Seminar: 'Microfluidics for Cell Physiology to Aggregated Gold Nanoparticles for Near-IR SERS Substrates' - September 28

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry and Physics departments for the seminar "Research in My Lab: Microfluidics for Cell Physiology to Aggregated Gold Nanoparticles for Near-IR SERS Substrates," presented by Jinseok Heo, associate professor of chemistry at Buffalo State, on Thursday, September 28, at 12:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 169. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome. This seminar is partially funded by the Faculty-Student Association.

Abstract
In this talk I will present a summary of research carried out in my lab for the past few years. My lab has been interested in the development of new tools to investigate cellular responses to osmotic stimuli. We also have an interest in advancing an analytical method applicable to forensic chemistry using gold nanoparticles. The first part of my talk will describe the fabrication of single cell microwell array based on photocrosslinkable hydrogel and discuss the results of its application for studying cell volume regulation, a regulatory cellular response to an osmotic shock, at the single cell level. In the second part of my talk. I will cover our recent discovery on the use of aggregated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as substrates for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in near-IR region. These AuNP aggregates formed by a quick-freezing method using liquid nitrogen exhibited a red-shifted plasmon band. The underlying mechanism of freezing-induced aggregation of AuNPs and the potential applications of these AuNP aggregates will be discussed.
