Tell Students: Study-Abroad Scholarships

Last year, Buffalo State students earned over $20,000 in financial aid through internal and external scholarships. Please encourage students to contact Tricia Herritt, director of international student and scholar services, or to look for scholarship applications on the International Education website, for more information.

SUNY Diversity Abroad Honors Scholarship
Students must be enrolled in a SUNY school, be attending a SUNY program, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, and be considered an underrepresented student. One scholarship of $2,000 is awarded. Deadline is 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 29.

SUNY Buffalo State Study-Abroad Scholarship Fund
The Study-Abroad Scholarship Fund provides financial awards to meritorious students participating in Buffalo State international study programs and contributes to promotional activities for these programs. Students must be matriculated at Buffalo State at the time of the scholarship application. Meritorious candidates will have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; study within their academic program; and have service, activities, interests, and work experience. An essay submission and interview are required. Deadline 4:00 p.m. Monday, October 2.

Tell Students: Rwanda 2018 Informational Meetings

Students from all majors are invited to join the Anne Frank Project's fifth student delegation to Rwanda in June 2018. Highlights of the trip include visiting genocide memorials, refugee camps, schools, villages, and wildlife safaris. The curriculum focuses on sharing AFP’s drama-based education and story-building model with Rwandan teachers and students. AFP’s rich history in Rwanda provides for deeply meaningful experiences well beyond typical study-abroad programs.

Informational meetings covering the application process, itinerary, travel cost, and learning outcomes of the trip will be held as follows:

Conference: Big Opportunities for Small Business - September 29

The campus community is invited to participate in an economic development conference that addresses doing business with anchor institutions, prime contractors, and government agencies on Friday, September 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The conference, "Big Opportunities for Small Business," includes an outstanding array of speakers possessing strong expertise in procurement, creative problem solving, and social media marketing. The opening keynote presentation will be given by Howard Zemsky, president of New York State Empire State Development. The luncheon keynote speaker is New York State Assemblyman Robin Schimminger, chair of the New York State Assembly's Commerce Committee. The conference includes all materials and lunch. This event is made possible through a grant from the United States Small Business Administration. The conference fee is waived for Buffalo State faculty, staff, and students. To register, please call the college's Small Business Development Center at 878-4030.

Tell Students: SkillShops for Student Success

Butler Library and the Academic Commons are happy to announce SkillShops, a new programming series focused on student success.

SkillShops are 30- to 50-minute drop-in workshops covering a range topics related to student success. These workshops focus on developing skills related to finding and using information, college readiness, writing, and technology. 

All SkillShops are held in Butler Library 314 unless stated otherwise. SkillShops are free and open to all.

The first SkillShop of the fall semester, "Finding Books," will be held on Tuesday, September 26, at 12:30 p.m.

CANCELED: Alumni Night: 'Blood at the Root' - September 30

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. The play will still go on as scheduled. Tickets for all performances are available online, by phone at 878-3005, or in person at the Rockwell Hall Box Office.

Casting Hall Productions, Buffalo State's student-run theater production company, will host an Alumni Night on Saturday, September 30, for its production of Blood at the Root, which is based on real events surrounding the Jena Six case in Louisiana. Alumni and guests are invited to attend a wine-and-cheese reception at 12:30 p.m. on the back deck of the Donald Savage Building (rain location: Rockwell Hall atrium) before the matinee performance at 2:00 p.m. in the Flexible Theatre.

The cost is $10 for alumni and $15 for guests.

Please register through the Alumni Association website before 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 29. Public parking will be free beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the faculty, staff, and student lots on campus. Attendees can pick up their tickets at will call before the event.

Diversity Dialogue Speaker Series: Identity and Community - September 26

Please join us for "Identity and Community: The Way Forward" on Tuesday, September 26, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall.

"Identity and Community" is part of the Diversity Dialogue Speaker Series, a platform where students, faculty, and staff come together to engage in honest conversations about social injustices or civil rights issues with an experienced community member serving as the content expert.

The purpose of the "Identity and Community" Diversity Dialogue is to explore the association between students’ identities and the Buffalo State community in which they live. Although held in collaboration with the Sociology Department, the program is not limited to sociology students. All Buffalo State students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend.
