‘A Pursuit of American Identity’: February 15

Posted:

The Buffalo State Community Academic Center is pleased to present “A Pursuit of American Identity,” a discussion session led by local civic leaders and social justice activists, on Thursday, February 15, from noon to 2:00 p.m. in Butler Library 210. The event is free and open to the public.

This is a crucial time to ask ourselves what it means to be an American. How do we identify ourselves as Americans, and what do we pursue? Americans—whether by birth or by naturalization—must invoke these questions to understand each other and to work together toward the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King and fellow civil rights leaders and activists paved the way for us. As we stand on the shoulders of these giants, let us ask ourselves whether we are living up to the dream or are falling behind in our progress as a society.

This event will afford Buffalo State students who have recently become American citizens a unique opportunity to engage in deep civic discussions with the campus community. Each discussion will be followed by a brief presentation on the topic. The program goal is to make students fully aware of their responsibilities as American citizens so that they are fully prepared to exercise their rights, such as conducting civil discourse and voting in elections. Most important, the program’s main objective is to exercise our rights as citizens to let our voices be heard and to actively participate in civil action and discourse.

A breakdown of the event is as follows:

Noon–12:10 p.m. Networking

12:10–12:25 p.m. Opening remarks by local civic leaders and social justice activists

12:25–12:45 p.m. Civic responsibility

12:45–1:05 p.m. Civic engagement

1:05–1:25 p.m. We the people

1:25–1:45 p.m. Plenary session

1:45–2:00 p.m. Closing remarks

Samosa, sushi, and tea will be served.
