Tell Students: Auditions for Staged Reading of OyamO's 'I Am a Man' - February 16

Posted:

Auditions for the Bengal Pause staged reading of Charles “OyamO” Gordon’s "I Am a Man" will be held Friday, February 16, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Flexible Theatre. An audition sign-up sheet is posted on the call board on the second floor of the Donald Savage Building.

Who should come to auditions? Students with no rehearsal conflicts who have an interest in giving breath and life to a powerful work of theater that celebrates the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the week that marks the 50th anniversary of his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee. We are looking for a diverse group of students who are passionate and intelligent, possess a strong work ethic, have distinct voices, and desire to engage the Buffalo State community and honor Dr. King by considering his life’s work and legacy through the artistic lens of a master craftsman, OyamO. No performance experience is necessary.

Preparation: (1) A limited number of perusal scripts will be available in the Theater Department, Savage Building 222. Please see Theater Deparment secretary Kim Taylor to sign out a script for 24 hours. Students who keep a script for more than 24 hours will not be able to audition. This is designed to give everyone the same opportunity to consider the text and gauge their interest in this project. (2) Sides (selections from the play that you will be asked to read during the audition) can be picked up in the Theater Department after Friday, February 9.

The commitment: There will be five rehearsals and two Bengal Pause time slots for this event. If you have conflicts with our rehearsal times, you are not eligible for this project. Please check the dates carefully before auditioning.

Friday, February 23, from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. Flexible Theatre - First read
Monday, March 5, from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Flexible Theatre - Act I
Monday, March 12, from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. TBA - Read through (I know some students will be coming and going during this rehearsal because of mandatory Theater Department auditions for fall 2018. Attending your audition will not be considered a conflict.)
Friday, March 16, from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. Flexible Theater - Act II
Monday, April 2, from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Flexible Theater - Final rehearsal

Tuesday, April 3, Bengal Pause staged reading of "I Am a Man" by OyamO Act I
Thursday, April 5, Bengal Pause staged reading of "I Am a Man" by OyamO Act II

Alternative Break: Valentine's Day Fundraiser - February 14

Posted:

Please stop by and support the Civic and Community Engagement’s Alternative Break program on Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, February 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building lobby. The student leadership team will be fundraising with wrapped flowers bouquets from Maureen’s Buffalo Wholesale Flower Market and chocolate bars from Fowler’s. This fundraiser will help the team minimize student fees for participation in a spring or summer break service trip. While you help the team reach their fundraising goal, you can also support local businesses. Wrapped flower bouquets can be purchased at $2 apiece, three for $5, or seven for $10. Chocolate bars are $1 each.

If you are unable to stop by our table, please e-mail alternativebreak@buffalostate.edu and a member of the team will make a special visit to your office with your flower or chocolate order.

Thank you for supporting a community engagement program that results in 97 percent of participants reporting that the experience motivates them to learn more about social issues in their community and where 94 percent feel more connected to the Buffalo State campus.
