Information Security Awareness: Alert for All Buffalo State Account Holders

Posted:

Please be aware that SUNY has advised us of a spear phishing campaign directed at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC). There is every reason to believe that this phishing attempt will be replicated across SUNY institutions, including Buffalo State. Please be vigilant.

Information received about the e-mail to HVCC is outlined below, but it is likely that the attackers will tailor the language and topic to each institution.

The subject line in the e-mail to HVCC employees is “ACTION REQUIRED.” The e-mail, pretending to be from the president of HVCC, indicates that a policy has been revised at HVCC and supplies a link for recipients to download the new document. The link appears to be a legitimate HVCC web address. The e-mail uses HVCC branding logos and campus language and terminology (i.e., the sender has researched campus documents). The e-mail is well written, with none of the typographical or grammatical errors commonly seen in phishing e-mail. The information and topic are related to current events.

Remember, never click on links in e-mail. If you believe something is not right, forward the e-mail to phishreports@buffalostate.edu and delete it. Call the office from which the e-mail appears to have been sent and ask if the e-mail is legitimate.

Please review the RITE Phishing Resources page and remember to regularly check the Buffalo State RITE Alerts page.

2018 Class Visit Program: February 21-23

Posted:

The Undergraduate Admissions Office at Buffalo State is hosting its annual Class Visit Program February 21–23. This unique initiative is an invitation-only event for high school seniors who have been accepted to Buffalo State College that allows them to attend an actual class alongside currently enrolled students. For many students, the class visit proves to be the decisive factor in their decision to attend Buffalo State. Recent data from 2014–2017 shows that 66 percent of participants not only deposit but also enroll.

This year's program has had the largest RSVP count to date, with over 500 students and parents expected over the three days, which will include five programs. While students are in class during the morning sessions, parents participate in Q&A panel discussions, where they can pose questions to representatives from Financial Aid, Residence Life, the Career Development Center, University Police, and Academic Commons. Over 30 academic instructors have allotted seats for our accepted students.

The Class Visit program will be hosted primarily in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall starting at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Friday, and at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday. In addition to our traditional morning visits, we will also host a special edition Honors Class Visit as well, a unique collaboration involving the Muriel A. Howard Honors Program.

The program will feature alumni speakers Shawn McKirchy on Thursday and Latrese Myers on Friday. Special thanks to the following people for their outstanding support of this year's program: David Loreto, director of undergraduate admissions; Erin Alonzo, associate vice president for enrollment management; James Mayrose, interim CIO and vice president for enrollment, marketing, and communications; and Mary-Jo Jagord, director of Alumni Affairs; as well as Amy McMillan, interim director of the Muriel A. Howard Honors Program, and the outstanding Buffalo State faculty for affording seats in their classes for our accepted students.

For more information, please contact Ken Robinson, assistant director of early outreach programming and coordinator of the Class Visit Program, 878-5024.
