Planned Windows and Mac Upgrades

Posted:

In order to maintain a safe and secure computing environment at Buffalo State, RITE Services began a campaign last December to upgrade campus computers to the latest supported operating systems. This includes

  • upgrading all PCs currently running Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10,
  • upgrading existing Windows 10 PCs to the latest build, and
  • upgrading all Macs currently running older versions of OS X to OS 10.12 (Sierra).

In December, faculty and staff members were given the opportunity to upgrade their devices at their convenience using the self-service tools available for PCs and Macs. We encourage faculty and staff members to take advantage of this self-service option, which will remain available through the end of March. Please see these step-by-step guides that explain how to upgrade your PC to Windows 10 and your Mac to Sierra.

Beginning the week of March 26, RITE Services will begin scheduling the deployment of the Windows and Mac OS upgrades and will target any computers that have not yet been upgraded. These upgrades will take place on a department-by-department basis (tentative rollout schedule). RITE Services will contact department heads to finalize the schedule.

For more information, please visit the Planned Operating System Upgrades for 2017/2018 page.

Information Security Awareness: Using Your Buffalo State E-mail as an Account Username

Posted:

From haveibeenpwned: In February 2018, a massive collection of almost 3,000 alleged data breaches was found online. While some of the data had previously been seen in Have I Been Pwned, 2,844 of the files consisting of more than 80 million unique e-mail addresses had not previously been seen. Each file contained both an e-mail address and plain text password and were consequently loaded as a single "unverified" data breach. Eighty-five Buffalo State e-mail addresses are in this database of 80 million. Make sure you have a strong password on your Buffalo State account, and don't use that password for any other accounts.

Vacation Accruals for Classified Service Employees

Posted:

Employees in the CSEA and PEF bargaining units are reminded that any vacation accrual balances that exceed 40 days on April 1, 2018, must be adjusted downward to stay within the maximum allowed by the NYS attendance rules and the agreements between the public employee unions and the State of New York.

If your vacation balance exceeds 300 hours (for employees who work a 7˝-hour day) or 320 hours (for employees who work an 8-hour day), you may wish to request to use vacation time before Sunday, April 1, to avoid losing leave accruals.
