Discussion: Animals in the City
?Presentation by Kimberly Hart

Tuesday, September 11
12:15 to 1:15 p.m.

Dogs and cats live in Istanbul's marginal green spaces, in neighborhood backstreets, around tombs and mosques, in cemeteries, and in parks. Surviving in part through human acts of generosity and kindness, animals carve out habitat in this city of over 15 million people. Kimberly Hart, associate professor of anthropology, will discuss how she used photography as a research method to document and represent the animals who live in the city and the processes she used to select images for the exhibit of the same name at the Bacon Gallery in Upton Hall at Buffalo State. This research was funded by a Senior Fulbright Scholarship (2015-2016) and a UUP Individual Development Grant (2016-2017).

Dr. Hart has 30 years of experience studying Turkey. Her previous work was in rural villages in western Anatolia.
This event is free with gallery admission. Information at www.burchfieldpenney.org.

Panel Discussion: What Museums Mean to the Life of an Artist
Thursday, September 13
6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

There is a complex relationship between artists, museums, and galleries. It is an ecosystem, and successful careers and recognition are reliant on the others. The Burchfield Penney Art Center, because of our mission and the artists that we present and collect, has the added layer. Our relationship is not just one of business, but we are neighbors, friends, and colleagues. Without the artists, the museums and the galleries would not exist. Not as essential as this, but important, without galleries and museums, artists would have a difficult time to make others aware of their work. What does it mean to be at the intersection of that relationship, for the museums and the artists?

Artists included in this discussion are Gary Nickard, Dorothea Braemer, LeRoi Johnson, and Catherine Shuman Miller, who are also featured in the 10 Years In exhibition. Each of these artists work in different media and markets. The concerns for conceptual, media, painter, and print artists have a specificity in how they navigate the art world. Moderated by Scott Propeack, chief curator and interim co-director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the event will also include an overview of how exhibitions move from concept to realization.

This event is free wth gallery admission. RSVP on Facebook and invite your friends!

Governor Cuomo Directs Flags to Half-Staff

Posted:

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings will be lowered to half-staff today, September 11, in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 men, women, and children who lost their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

"Nearly 17 years ago, New York was dealt a blow so devastating that the loss and suffering are still felt to this day. On September 11, 2001, the lives of countless Americans were forever changed in an instant as thousands of innocent men, women, and children perished in the deadliest terror attack this nation has ever seen.

"We will never forget these individuals and the selfless heroes who did not make it home that day. Today, we honor those we lost and thank the brave law enforcement officers, firefighters, medical professionals, and other first responders who saved so many lives in the wake of this unspeakable tragedy. We also remember the courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces, including the New York National Guard, who protected our freedom then and continue to do so now at home and abroad. New York is eternally grateful for their service to our nation," Governor Cuomo said.
