American Red Cross Blood Drive: October 4

The American Red Cross will hold a campus blood drive on Thursday, October 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the traveling donor center stationed in the Student Union Plaza. Call (800) RED-CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment or to learn more. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Tell Students: Immunization Compliancy

Please ask your students to check their Buffalo State e-mail accounts and Degree Work holds about messages regarding immunization status. Students should not ignore this e-mail as we will be mandated to remove from campus students who don’t comply with this immunization requirement. If students are removed from campus, they will still be liable for tuition and other expenses. Information about Public Health Law and immunizations can be found on the Weigel Wellness website. Please have students call 878-6711 with questions or come directly to the Weigel Wellness Center for assistance. They may also fax records to (716) 878-6727. Weigel Wellness provides measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) immunizations at no cost.

Beyond Boundaries Presents 'Swim Team' - September 27

The Equity and Campus Diversity Office, the Communication Department, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center are pleased to announce the screening of Swim Team, the first film in the Beyond Boundaries: Dare to Be Diverse screening and discussion series for fall 2018, on Thursday, September 27, at 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium.

In New Jersey, the parents of a boy on the autism spectrum take matters into their own hands, forming a competitive swim team by recruiting diverse teens on the spectrum and training them with high expectations and zero pity. Swim Team chronicles the extraordinary rise of the Jersey Hammerheads, capturing a moving quest for inclusion, independence, and a life that feels winning. Watch the trailer.

'Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope' - October 23

The Resilience Project at Buffalo State College will host a free movie screening and discussion of Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope on Tuesday, October 23, from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Assembly Hall. There is no cost for this event.

The movie chronicles a new movement among pediatricians, therapists, educators, and community members who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction, and disease. This film is not suitable for children. Watch the trailer.

This event is sponsored by the School of Education, the Professional Development Schools Consortium, and the Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education at Buffalo State and is made possible through Prevent Child Abuse New York.

Travel Training

To better serve the campus community, the Travel Services Department now offers scheduled travel training, as well as scheduled small-group training. All travelers and departments have unique travel issues, and individual training allows the Travel Services Department to customize its training to travelers’ needs. Small-group training may be more appropriate when an office or department would like to have uniform training for all employees within its area.

Online Course Development Certificate Series

The Online Course Development? Certificate series ?prepares instructors to design, teach, and enhance online or hybrid courses using best practices of online teaching and learning. Learn how to strengthen your online and hybrid skills to enhance course design and increase student engagement.? 

Workshop Information
This fall, both the basic and advanced Online Course Development series will be offered in an online asynchronous format. All learning and instructional activities will occur in Blackboard for the duration of the series.  

The basic Online Course Development series is composed of the following six modules: 

  • Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning 
  • Backward Design Step 1: Developing Course Objectives and Priorities 
  • Backward Design Step 2: Developing Course Assessments 
  • Backward Design Step 3: Developing the Learning Plan 
  • Designing and Organizing Your Online Course 
  • Interaction: Communication and Collaboration 

The Advanced Online Course Development series is composed of the following four modules: 

  • Creating Interactive Content for Your Course 
  • Authentic Assessment 
  • Universal Design for Learning 
  • Open SUNY Course Quality Review (OSCQR) Rubric 

Both series begin Monday, October 1, and end Friday, November  30. You may enroll in one or both series. The time commitment for this series varies by individual, but averages two to three hours per week.

Information Security Awareness: British Airways Breached

According to the Economist, British Airways reported that hackers obtained names, street and e-mail addresses, credit card numbers, expiration dates, and CVV (security) codes from its databases. The breach lasted 15 days from 22:58 British Standard Time on August 21, 2018, through 21:45 British Standard time on September 5, 2018. If you executed a transaction with British Airways during this time, please call your bank.
