Constitution Day: 'First Amendment, Social Media, and Our Imperiled Democracy' - September 17

Posted:

The Buffalo State College Political Science and Public Administration Department invites students, faculty, and staff members to a Constitution Day event, "First Amendment, Social Media, and Our Imperiled Democracy," presented by Associate Professor Peter Yacobucci, on Thursday, September 17, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. via Zoom videoconference.

The speech and assembly rights enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution have allowed the open discussion and debate necessary for a thriving democracy. These political freedoms are at the core of why we are the country we are; however, with the growth and increasing omnipresence of social media, these freedoms are under attack. This presentation will open a lively debate on the meaning of the First Amendment, whether its interpretation fits our social media political environment, and the impacts this interpretation is having on the vitality of our democracy. We will examine whether our democracy can survive our new social media environment.

RSVP to participate in the discussion, and a meeting link will be sent via e-mail.

For more upcoming events, please visit Student Leadership and Engagement's virtual programming page.

Beyond Boundaries Presents 'Warrior Women': September 24

Posted:

The Equity and Campus Diversity Office and the Communication Department are pleased to announce the screening of Warrior Women, the first film in the Beyond Boundaries: Dare to Be Diverse screening and discussion series for fall 2020, on Thursday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom videoconference. Registration is required. RSVP online.

Warrior Women details the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk, an American Indian Movement (AIM) leader who shaped a kindred group of activists’ children—including her daughter Marcy—into the “We Will Remember” Survival School as a Native alternative to government-run education. Together, Madonna and Marcy fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother and daughter. Today, with Marcy now a mother herself, both are still at the forefront of Native issues, fighting against the environmental devastation of the Dakota Access Pipeline and for Indigenous cultural values.

This semester, all films in the Beyond Boundaries series will take place virtually. We have some amazing films lined up and some very special panelists. The full calendar is available online.

Please feel free to share this information widely, and please join us for this award-winning film.
