TEU Program Improvement Retreat - Now Remote via Zoom: January 28

Teacher Education Unit (TEU) faculty members, please register for the TEU Program Improvement Remote Retreat on Friday, January 28, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. via Zoom. Please note the change to a virtual format. The retreat will no longer be in person. All teacher education faculty members are needed!

This year, your attendance is more important than ever, as our CAEP accreditation site visit will take place March 13–15. This retreat will help us prepare to highlight our excellence in teacher and leader preparation.

  Retreat Objectives

  • Dig deep into your program-level data with colleagues using newly redesigned and updated program dashboards.
  • Explore candidate performance on state and unit assessments.
  • Develop and revise action plans to capture the work you do.
  • Discover the importance of your role during our CAEP site visit

Taking Applied Learning to New Places: January 12, 13

Are you already including hands-on experiences in your classes? Have you been thinking about new ways to engage students in their coursework? Buffalo State College’s Applied Learning initiative is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to dive deep into applied learning. This two-day mini-conference workshop will be held Wednesday and Thursday, January 12 and 13. The January 12 session, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., will explore applied learning as high-impact practices, tenets for effective and meaningful experiences, and the various ways applied learning is happening at Buffalo State. The January 13 session, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., will include breakout sessions covering specific areas such as service learning, undergraduate research, global engagement, and more. Participants will have the opportunity to work with facilitators on further activity development including structured reflection, timelines and use of online supports.

Applied learning refers to an educational approach whereby students learn by engaging in direct application of skills, theories, and models. Buffalo State is committed to providing a variety of applied learning opportunities for students, including internships, service learning, research, civic engagement, and international and domestic study away. 

The workshop will cover

  • forms of applied learning and strategies for integration;
  • orientation, preparation, and training for student participants;
  • monitoring and continuous improvement;
  • structured reflection; and
  • assessment and evaluation.                    

This unique and collaborative workshop will bring together valuable expertise and resources from across campus, including the Teaching and Learning Center, Civic and Community Engagement, and Global Engagement. Call for Nominations: Celebration of Community Engagement

Nominations are now being accepted for the Celebration of Community Engagement Awards. These awards recognize students, faculty, staff, and community partners who make a difference locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally through civic and community engagement initiatives throughout the academic year.   

Three faculty awards bring recognition to early career, mid-career, and faculty leaders in community engagement. The campus community is also encouraged to nominate deserving students, student groups, community partners, faculty members, or classes for their outstanding achievements for fall 2021 and spring 2022 community engagement activities. 

Please help us recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond this year. More information and the nomination web form can be found on the Civic and Community Engagement website. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, April 22.

The NYS Employee Assistance Program continues to host the very popular WellNYS Daily To-Do email. This program sends a daily email with a tip that encourages a healthful behavior. Sign up to receive the WellNYS Daily To-Do email every morning.

The WellNYS Everyday Monthly Challenge Program is another option that promotes practicing a healthful behavior for 20 days out of the month, which hopefully develops into a habit. Sign up for the WellNYS Everyday Monthly Challenge Program.

'The Promotional' - January 2022: Weigel Health Promotions Monthly Newsletter

A new year means a new issue of the Promotional! The January 2022 edition of the Promotional newsletter is now available. Stay informed with upcoming events, news, recipes, tips, contests, and more—everything you need to know about what Weigel has to offer. Each month the newsletter will be uploaded to our website.

The newsletter has copies of all event fliers. Click on the image to open the link or swipe to advance to the next page. 

Similar to the newsletter format, we have also added a couple of online resources with information, guidelines, and resources about COVID, vaccines, booster shots, testing, appointments, quarantine, isolation, more. The section will be updated regularly.

Another new online feature is our online self-care series, featuring tips, tricks, events, programs, resources, and more to help you with your self-care.

Ensemble will upgrade Buffalo State College's instance of the Ensemble Video platform to the latest version (5.7.0 x7) on Wednesday, January 5, at 7:00 a.m. Ensemble Video will be unavailable during this maintenance window, which is not expected to take more than 30 minutes.

In Memoriam: Brenda K. Shelton

The Buffalo State College community is saddened by the death of Brenda K. Shelton, associate professor emerita of history and social studies education, who died December 5, 2021. Dr. Shelton joined the college in 1972 and retired in 1993. She is survived by two children and four grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date. More information is available online.

The Buffalo State College community is saddened by the death of Donna M. Hayes, assistant professor emerita of dietetics and nutrition, who died December 22, 2021. Ms. Hayes joined the college in 1982 and retired in 2014. Services were held in Ohio. More information is available online.

In Memoriam: John E. 'Jack' Mack

The Buffalo State College community is saddened by the death of John E. “Jack” Mack, associate professor emeritus of earth sciences and science education, who died December 29, 2021. Dr. Mack joined the college in 1973 and retired in 2008. He is survived by his wife, Jayne; two children; and three grandchildren. His son, John P. “Jack” Mack, is the assistant clinical manager of the Buffalo State Counseling Center. Services will be held at a later date. More information is available online.

2022 Seoul International Summer School: Recruiting Visiting Professors

The University of Seoul, a Buffalo State College partner, invites prominent faculty members to apply for the 2022 Seoul International Summer School (SISS).

SISS is looking for instructors in the areas of business, international relations, economics, and urban sociology. Interested faculty members must submit an application, letter of self-introduction, course proposal, and syllabus. The submission period is January 17–28. 

Term of appointment: 2022 Summer Semester (June 26–July 23)
Appointment date: June 2022 

Salary is $9,280. Salary includes all airfare, accommodation fee, lecture fee, tax, exchange fee, and remittance fee.
