Conversations in and out of the Disciplines - 'Half-Connecting Theory: Reading Health and Pathology in the World around Us from an African Psychology Perspective' - November 4

Posted:

The 2022–2023 “Conversations in and out of the Disciplines” series continues this Friday, November 4, as Marcus Watson, assistant professor of Africana studies, presents “Half-Connecting Theory: Reading Health and Pathology in the World around Us from an African Psychology Perspective” at 3:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 320. The talk will be followed by a brief Q&A and a short wine and cheese reception. Everyone is welcome.

The “Conversations” series was started 15 years ago by Ann Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emerita of English, to “celebrate and draw attention to the research being done in various departments at Buffalo State College.” Over the last decade, colleagues from Anthropology, Art Conservation, Art History, Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, and Secondary Education, among others, have shared their work with the Buffalo State and Buffalo communities.

Stay tuned for more information about our upcoming talks this spring, which will include presentations by Hilary Lochte, assistant professor of English education; Kimberly Kamper-DeMarco, assistant professor of psychology; and A. D. Annas, associate professor and director of television and film arts.

Free Online Narcan Training: November 30

Posted:

Please join us on Wednesday, November 30, for a live Narcan online training session, presented by Horizon Health Services at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom. Join from your computer or mobile device or attend the Watch Party with free refreshments in Weigel Wellness Center 203.
Zoom link.

Narcan is a nasal spray that can revive people who have overdosed and reverse the effects of heroin and other opioids. Opioid use has become an epidemic, and cases have increased significantly during the pandemic. While Narcan is available over the counter and no formal training is required, here are a few reasons why you might want to attend a training:

  • Older friends or family with memory issues who can’t remember when they have taken their medication and accidentally take it twice.
  • Pets that get into everything.
  • Kids mistaking pills (which now come in different colors) for candy.

This free training is offered in collaboration with the Employee Assistance Program and the Professional Development Center. Open to all students, faculty, and staff. Please consider allowing students to attend for extra credit.

Please contact Paula Madrigal, assistant director of prevention and health promotions, with questions.

Survey: Community Partnerships LibGuide

Posted:

Your input is requested as the Civic and Community Engagement Office (CCE) seeks to expand its collection of community-engaged learning resources. We are in the process of building a new guide that will focus specifically on community partnerships. Our office currently offers a Faculty LibGuide and a Student LibGuide. The new guide is intended to include a list of resources to support community-engaged learning for our partners, potentially share appropriate resources that align with their work, and feature important Buffalo-specific resources.

We are interested in promoting opportunities to connect, support, and strengthen collaborative relationships between the campus and the surrounding Buffalo community. We invite you to share your ideas by completing this brief survey

Please contact the CCE with questions.

Donate Eyeglasses, Hearing Aids, and Cell Phones

Posted:

Did you know that in addition to celebrating Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November, November 13 is World Kindness Day and November 29 is National Day of Giving (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving)? Here are a few ways you can participate this year and all year round.

Last year, Weigel Health Promotion started collecting used eyeglasses, hearing aids, and cell phones in the vestibule of the Weigel Wellness Center (8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday–Friday). The donation box is located on the first floor, to the left by the doors. If your donation is larger than the box provided, please feel free to leave your donation with the staff at the front desk of the Health Center.

Eyeglasses will be donated to the Lions Club International Foundation’s recycling center to benefit LCI’s vision programs. Hearing aids will be donated to the Hearing Aid Project. Cell phones will be donated in collaboration with the Dean of Students Office to benefit Verizon’s efforts to aid victims of domestic violence.

This initiative is available year-round. At the end of each semester, items will be tallied and delivered to their respective agencies.

We are happy to report that so far we have collected and donated almost 200 items to help serve our community and others. Thank you for doing your part, Buffalo State!
