Brightspace: Managing Your Move, Open Labs, and Fundamentals Workshop Series

All faculty members are encouraged to begin training in Brightspace, the new SUNY-wide learning management system.

In-Person Training Options
In-person training sessions are being offered by Instructional Design and Distance Learning (IDDL) and the Teaching and Learning Center. These sessions are hosted in a variety of labs across campus. Registration is through the Workshop Registration System.

  • The Brightspace Fundamentals Workshop Series is designed for instructors new to Brightspace and is suitable for instructors teaching in any modality: face-to-face, hybrid, or online. Workshops in the series are Navigation and Interface; Communication Tools; Authoring and Publishing Content; Gradable Activities: Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes; and Gradebook.
     
  • Managing Your Move to Brightspace: “Build from Scratch” or “Copy and Clean” Strategies. These workshops offer strategies for either building a course in Brightspace or migrating course materials from Blackboard into Brightspace.
     
  • Brightspace LMS Open Lab. Need assistance with your course in Brightspace? This lab is an open forum devoted to answering questions and solving problems that faculty may have about navigating Brightspace. Bring your course-specific questions and have them answered here!

Online Training Options

  • Online synchronous workshops will be provided by the SUNY Center for Professional Development. Registration is open.
  • Online asynchronous modules are available within the Buffalo State Brightspace environment. Log in using the "Network Login" button, where you can enter your Buffalo State username and password. If you are experiencing log-in issues, please submit a ticket via the IT portal.

CCE LibGuides: Available Resources for Community-Engaged Faculty and Students

The Civic and Community Engagement Office (CCE) offers two valuable resources to support students and faculty members who are involved in community-engaged teaching, scholarship, and research. The Faculty LibGuide assists instructors with incorporating community-engaged pedagogy into courses; it also contains resources that support community-engaged research and scholarship. The Student LibGuide helps students deepen their understanding of societal issues, developing civic knowledge and expanding their capacity to be active members of their community.

Call for Nominations: Outstanding Master's Theses and Projects - Deadline March 1

The Graduate Advisory Council is accepting nominations for Outstanding Master’s Theses and Outstanding Master’s Projects. The purpose of these awards is to recognize outstanding student research and applied work at the graduate level. Up to three thesis awards and three project awards will be made. Nominations will be accepted for students who graduated in 2022 (J-Term, May, August, or December).

Nominations may be made by thesis or project advisers or by students themselves. Additional reviews are required from the department chair and one external evaluator. Guidelines and the electronic nomination form are available on the Graduate School website.

The deadline for submission of nominations and copies of theses and projects to the Graduate School is Wednesday, March 1. All documents and questions can be sent to Ian Leberman, Interim Assistant to the Director of Graduate Studies.

Lots I-34 and I-35 Temporarily Closed for Construction: January 23

Posted:

Lots I-34 and I-35 will be closed Monday, January 23, to accommodate the rescheduled installation of generator housing at Upton Hall. Individuals requiring accessible parking that day may make use of the handicap spaces in lots I-32 and I-37. The north entrance of Bulger Communication Center will also be closed on January 23.

Please email Parking Services with questions about this temporary lot closure. Your patience is appreciated as this important work is undertaken.

2022 W-2 Forms Available Online

Active Buffalo State employees can view and print their W-2 Wage and Tax Statement from any computer or smartphone through NYS Payroll Online.

Go to the State Payroll Self-Service website.

1. Log in to www.suny.edu/hrportal.

2. Click on the NYS Payroll Online icon.

3. Complete the verification process the first time you log in. You will need your nine-digit NYS Employee ID obtained from SUNY HR Self Service or your pay stub.

4. For NYS Payroll Online, if you do not have the Payroll Online application on the NY.gov portal, go to https://psonline.osc.ny.gov/ in the same browser session and tab after completing the verification process.

5. Select View W-2.

6. Select Year End Form for required year. (Please be sure that pop-ups are enabled in your browser.)

7. Print the W-2.

Paper copies of the 2022 W-2s will be picked up by the U.S. Postal Service Later this month.

Within the State Payroll Self-Service system, you can elect to opt out of receiving paper direct deposit stubs.  If you are not enrolled in direct deposit, you can enroll anytime by completing the direct deposit enrollment request form.

Author Visit: Jessica Wilson - February 9

Buffalo State University is excited to welcome Jessica Wilson, R.D., author of the book It's Always Been Ours, on Thursday, February 9, at 4:00 p.m. in the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center. Ms. Wilson's presentation promises to create complex conversations around the impact of racism and misogyny on beliefs about food, health, wellness, and body narratives. Please invite family, friends, and students to attend. The event is free and open to the community. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. A book signing will immediately follow the presentation. Books will be on sale in the Barnes & Noble at Buffalo State Bookstore.

ConnectLife Blood Drive: Today

Buffalo State will host a semiannual blood drive in support of its community partner ConnectLife today, February 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall.

Appointments are encouraged but not necessary. Appointments can be made by phone at (716) 529-4270 or online through the ConnectLife website (sponsor code 001047).

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, blood supplies in Western New York are critically low. ConnectLife is Western New York’s only community blood bank, contributing nearly 80 percent of the local hospitals’ blood supply. Every drop of blood collected stays here in Western New York.

If you are eligible to donate, please consider supporting today’s ConnectLife blood drive. All donors will receive a pair of Bandits tickets. Thank you.
