Earth Day and Arbor Day Environmental Fair: April 20

Posted:

The Buffalo State?University Sustainability Committee invites the campus community to attend the annual Earth Day and Arbor Day Environmental Fair on Thursday, April 20, from noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union or outside in the Student Union Plaza, weather permitting.

Come and celebrate Buffalo State University’s Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum, as it has earned 2022 Tree Campus Higher Education designation from the Arbor Day Foundation.

See what the campus and the Grant-Amherst neighborhoods are doing to make our campus and the surrounding area more environmentally sustainable. Learn how the campus trees in the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum and throughout the city of Buffalo are instrumental in the health of the local ecology, storm water management, and the aesthetics of our campus and surrounding neighborhoods.

Explore what you can do as an individual to help with this great cause. There will be plenty of information tables to visit, giveaways, and fun activities.

Please contact campus arborist?Steven Sypniewski?for more information. This is one of a?series of April events?sponsored by the Buffalo State University Sustainability Committee in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day.

Chemistry Spring 2023 Seminar Series: 'Linking Atom Positions to Materials Structure-Chemistry for Advanced Material Design and Development' - April 13

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry Department for the seminar "Linking Atom Positions to Materials Structure-Chemistry for Advanced Material Design and Development," presented by Baishakhi Mazumder, assistant professor in the Department of Materials Design and Innovation at the University at Buffalo, on Thursday, April 13, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 176.

Abstract
Improving performance and efficiency in a wide range of applications including consumer appliances, all-electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, and extraction and conversion in cost-effective renewable energy sources can save energy, significantly reducing costs, benefiting both the economy and environment. Key to revolutionizing device components for technologies rely on the material architecture and chemistry that controls the crucial properties and performance. One of the ultimate goals of material design and development is to link the complex behavior that occurs at the materials constituent’s level and the desired properties, and ultimately generate know-how about what really happens at the scale of charge carriers and microstructures within the material systems. To achieve this information, Dr. Mazumder and her team employ an advanced microscopy tool, atom probe tomography that can obtain rich atomistic data on the structure and chemistry of these materials systems. Atom probe tomography (APT) is an advanced characterization tool that offers three-dimensional chemical imaging of material structures at the sub-nanometer scale. This lensless point-projection microscopy technique resolves individual atoms from a nano-dimensional tip with magnifications up to 106 generating structure-chemistry information. This information will be crucial to building connections with the material properties and guide the pathways for material design and development.

Ramadan 2023: Faculty, Staff Awareness regarding Fasting Students

Posted:

With only 11 more days left in Ramadan, this message is a reminder to all faculty and staff members to be mindful and aware that the vast majority of Muslim students on campus are fasting (no food or drink from before sunrise till sunset). Students might be tired, so kindly allow them some consideration or leeway, as needed, with their coursework, submissions, tests, quizzes, and so on. Kindly mention your awareness in class, as many Muslim students do not have "obvious" Muslim-sounding names, and to know that they have the help and support of their teachers would mean a lot to them.

Please visit the Equity and Campus Diversity website to read the Policy on Discrimination Based on Religion.

Thank you.

Additional Future Forward Forum Scheduled: April 13

Posted:

From the Chair of the Buffalo State Senate
An additional Future Forward Forum (faculty and staff focused) has been scheduled for Thursday, April 13, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Assembly Hall.

Please consider attending the forum to engage in important discussions regarding future pathways, opportunities, and possibilities for Buffalo State University. The themes that emerge from the campus forums will suggest opportunities that the campus might explore in the next decade or so. A facilitator, Morgan Williams-Bryant, will work with graduate students from the Higher Education Administration Department to gather feedback during these sessions and will turn the information over to the Future Forward Committee, which will develop a white paper delineating opportunities to be available to the campus community.

Please register online for the April 13 forum.
