Tell Students: Transition of Student Email from Gmail to Outlook Starts May 22

Posted:

Buffalo State Information Technology is excited to announce that all current students will soon be receiving a brand-new email account in Outlook. Students will be able to access these new accounts starting Monday, May 22. This is part of the university’s plan to phase out Google accounts by summer 2024. While students will still be able to access their Google accounts for a full year after receiving their Outlook accounts, the new Outlook address will become their primary account and should be used for official campus communication.

Some important details about these new accounts:

  • New email address | Starting May 22, students will have a new email address in the format of username@buffalostate.edu. All new mail will be delivered to this address.
  • Message Forwarding | Starting May 22, messages sent to a student’s old address (username@mail.buffalostate.edu) will be forwarded to their new Outlook address.
  • Mailbox Migration | A one-time copy of each student’s mailbox from Gmail to Outlook will occur during summer 2023. This migration will be staggered, so mail in a student's Gmail Inbox may not appear in their Outlook Inbox right away.
  • Accessing Outlook email | Students can access their email from a web browser or by using the Outlook mobile or desktop app.
  • Sign-in with network credentials | Unlike with Gmail, which requires a separate password, students will sign in to Outlook using their network credentials.
  • Retaining Access to Outlook | Students will retain access to their Microsoft 365 account for approximately one full year after leaving Buffalo State.

Some important details about Gmail accounts:

Following the closure of Google accounts next summer, faculty members in the School of Education who use Google Classroom will be able to request Google accounts for themselves and their classes by submitting a ticket. Google accounts will be accessible only for the duration of the term requested.

We’ve also provided some links to share with students explaining how to transfer contacts, calendar events, and Google Drive contents. Please share these with students as needed.

To learn more about this project, please visit the Microsoft 365 Project Information and Frequently Asked Questions pages. Students in need of assistance can email the Help Desk or open a Technology Help ticket.

Course Materials, Textbook Adoptions Urgently Needed

Posted:

Faculty members, the Barnes & Noble at Buffalo State Bookstore needs course material adoption information for all courses you are scheduled to teach. Course materials include textbooks, digital books, and courseware access. If you are not using any course materials, we still need to know! You can indicate this by selecting "No Course Materials Required." If you are using open educational resources (OER), please indicate this by selecting "Using OER".

We are at a 40 percent adoption rate for the fall 2023 semester. There is just one week left to submit adoptions for fall courses. Please visit the adoption input portal (AIP) today to submit your adoption responses. The portal is a single sign-on with the campus, so no additional password is needed. There is a simple one-click re-adopt procedure for courses using the same materials from previous semesters. New selections can easily be added.

We thank all those who have submitted their course material information already. It is instrumental for the success of our students to have adoptions in by this deadline so we can provide them with the needed course materials by the beginning of the fall semester.

If you have any questions about submitting adoptions, please contact Trista Hayes, textbook manager, or Lynn Puma, bookstore manager.

Thank you.

Student Accessibility Services - Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society - Class of 2023

Posted:

Student Accessibility Services at Buffalo State University is privileged to induct the 2023 class of the Epsilon Chi chapter of the Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society.

The Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society was founded in 2004 to recognize the academic accomplishments of students with disabilities. In addition to recognizing academic achievement, Delta Alpha Pi seeks to lessen and eventually eliminate the stigma and negative stereotyping that have been historically associated with disability. The members of Delta Alpha Pi challenge society to view disability as an aspect of diversity, existing on a continuum throughout an individual’s lifespan, and encourage the implementation of universal design, so that the environment (learning, physical, attitudinal), not the individual, adjusts to provide access to all individuals.

Students who become members of Delta Alpha Pi identify themselves as honor students who have a disability. By their open acknowledgment of their disability status, they serve as role models for other students with disabilities and advance the goals of Delta Alpha Pi on their campuses and in the community.

Each year Student Accessibility Services will continue to recognize these students’ academic accomplishments by honoring and acknowledging their determination and perseverance. This year’s class will receive a Delta Alpha Pi certificate of initiation, chapter pin, and graduation cords.

Please visit the Student Accessibility Services website to see the complete list of students who wish to be recognized from all induction years.

Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these amazing students!

Chemistry Seminar: 'Method Development and Validation of Total Mercury Content in Effluent Wastewater by Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy' - April 20

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry Department for the seminar "Method Development and Validation of Total Mercury Content in Effluent Wastewater by Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy," presented by Sandra Ogedengbe, graduate student at SUNY Buffalo State, on Thursday, April 20, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 176.

Abstract
The presence and concentration of ambient mercury contamination in our natural environment and workplaces will continue to be closely monitored and regulated as it imposes grave implications and serious risks to human health. Ongoing quantitative analysis has already become a routine part of industrial chemical plants’ in-process and end-stage testing. Mercury contamination in waste generated by these chemical processes can present substantial operational hurdles as compliance must be demonstrated by treatment, accurate measurement, and reporting of waste materials against stringently low limits before it can be released from the site into natural bodies of water or the municipal water supply.

An accurate and reliable low-level method of analysis for the chemical detection and quantitation of total mercury content in effluent wastewater from an industrial chemical plant has been validated and deemed suitable for its intended use. The method validation parameters included an assessment of selectivity, linearity (range), accuracy, precision, and robustness. Acceptable system suitability and sample results for all experiments were demonstrated according to current acceptable practices and limits laid forth in a pre-determined validation plan.
