Open Invitation: Youth Voices Conference - May 4

Posted:

The Center for English Teaching at Buffalo State University and the Buffalo State English Department present the seventh annual Youth Voices Conference, a celebration of the remarkable stories and talents of students from across our region, on Thursday, May 4, from 4:00 to 8:30 p.m. The conference is free and open to the public; registration is required.

Buffalo poet laureate Jillian Hanesworth will kick off the conference, which features a musical performance by Buffalo hip-hop artist Chuckie Campbell and an interactive art installation in collaboration with the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

The Youth Voices Conference, now in its seventh year, seeks to reclaim space for the voices of youth and their teachers, and to reposition classrooms as learning spaces of meaning, purpose, and power in the Buffalo Niagara and Rochester regions. Last year’s conference drew more than 500 students from large and small schools across Western New York to present their projects to authentic audiences.

Student presentations at the Youth Voices Conference have included short documentaries, spoken word poetry, podcasts, and TED Talks based on creative classroom projects. Past presentations have featured student work exploring childhood and families, popular music, Islamophobia, the impact of genocide, identity and immigration, race and gender, the environment, and religious beliefs among many others.

Arbor Day Lecture: 'Ancient Trees and Old Growth Forests of Western New York' - April 28

Posted:

Members of the Buffalo State University campus community are invited to enjoy the lecture "Ancient Trees and Old Growth Forests of Western New York," presented by David Clark, certified nursery and landscape professional (CNLP), on Friday, April 28, at 3:00 p.m. in Technology Building 160. Learn where the oldest trees reside in Western New York and which of these trees are accessible to view on public property.

Mr. Clark is a horticulture instructor, lecturer, and designer. He teaches horticulture classes at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens and Niagara County Community College and is a lecturer at many trade shows and seminars. This is a great opportunity to learn about our beautiful old-growth trees of Buffalo and the surrounding areas.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Susan McCartney, director of the Small Business Development Center, or campus arborist Steven Sypniewski. Thank you to the Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum for sponsoring this lecture.

This is one of a series of April events sponsored by the Buffalo State University Sustainability Committee in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day.

Arbor Day Tree-Planting Ceremony: April 28

Posted:

The Buffalo State University Sustainability Committee invites the campus community to attend an Arbor Day Tree-Planting Ceremony on Arbor Day—Friday, April 28—from noon to 12:30 p.m. on the east side of Bishop Hall near Cleveland Circle. The event will move to the Student Union Plaza, north of Cleveland Hall, in the event of inclement weather. This event will feature speakers whose topics include the significance of Arbor Day, how urban trees are important for ecological systems, how the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum has become an important campus outdoor classroom, and an update of the current condition and future of the arboretum.

An American sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) will be added to the over 1,400 trees in the Buffalo State University’s Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum. This tree is native to New York State; however, it is much more common in the southeastern United States. This tree is important to commerce as it is used for lumber, resins, and turpentine. The Native Americans would use its sap to make chewing gum.

Thank you to the Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum for donating the tree and supplies and to the volunteers who will help plant the tree.

Please contact campus arborist Steven Sypniewski for more information. This is one of a series of April events sponsored by the Buffalo State University Sustainability Committee in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day.

Tell Students: Transition of Student Email from Gmail to Outlook Starts May 22

Posted:

Buffalo State Information Technology is excited to announce that all current students will soon be receiving a brand-new email account in Outlook. Students will be able to access these new accounts starting Monday, May 22. This is part of the university’s plan to phase out Google accounts by summer 2024. While students will still be able to access their Google accounts for a full year after receiving their Outlook accounts, the new Outlook address will become their primary account and should be used for official campus communication.

Some important details about these new accounts:

  • New email address | Starting May 22, students will have a new email address in the format of username@buffalostate.edu. All new mail will be delivered to this address.
  • Message Forwarding | Starting May 22, messages sent to a student’s old address (username@mail.buffalostate.edu) will be forwarded to their new Outlook address.
  • Mailbox Migration | A one-time copy of each student’s mailbox from Gmail to Outlook will occur during summer 2023. This migration will be staggered, so mail in a student's Gmail Inbox may not appear in their Outlook Inbox right away.
  • Accessing Outlook email | Students can access their email from a web browser or by using the Outlook mobile or desktop app.
  • Sign-in with network credentials | Unlike with Gmail, which requires a separate password, students will sign in to Outlook using their network credentials.
  • Retaining Access to Outlook | Students will retain access to their Microsoft 365 account for approximately one full year after leaving Buffalo State.

Some important details about Gmail accounts:

Following the closure of Google accounts next summer, faculty members in the School of Education who use Google Classroom will be able to request Google accounts for themselves and their classes by submitting a ticket. Google accounts will be accessible only for the duration of the term requested.

We’ve also provided some links to share with students explaining how to transfer contacts, calendar events, and Google Drive contents. Please share these with students as needed.

To learn more about this project, please visit the Microsoft 365 Project Information and Frequently Asked Questions pages. Students in need of assistance can email the Help Desk or open a Technology Help ticket.
