Chemistry Fall 2023 Seminar Series - 'Towards In-Field Miniaturized Liquid Chromatography: Biocides in Wastewater as a Proof of Concept' - December 7

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry Department for the final talk of the fall 2023 seminar series, “Towards In-Field Miniaturized Liquid Chromatography: Biocides in Wastewater as a Proof of Concept,” presented by Robert Ernst, M.S. in forensic science candidate at SUNY Buffalo State University, on Thursday, December 7, at 12:15 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 175.

Abstract
Advancements in technology have led to a push for the portability of benchtop lab equipment. Many instruments have been miniaturized and made handheld such as the Raman spectrometer. With the increase in the portability of instruments, there is a decrease in the analysis time of samples. Crime-scene analysis time is quite long in some areas as the evidence is transported back to a central lab to be tested. The portability of certain instruments can help reduce the analysis time of evidence. Many models of miniaturized liquid chromatography have been created. The integral parts of liquid chromatography had to be miniaturized. A proof of concept was developed for the analysis of biocides in wastewater for a new portable LC. Authors compare two benchtop liquid chromatography instruments to a portable liquid chromatography instrument. The portable version uses less solvent than HPLC, and the portable instrument can comparably quantify the biocides to the benchtop instruments. The field conditions have little effect on the portable instrument’s ability to analyze compounds. The merits of portable liquid chromatography instruments versus the benchtop instruments are compared.

SEFA E-pledge Renew/Rollover Option Is Not Automatic

Posted:

Dear generous donors to SEFA/United Way: You may have assumed that if you donated by payroll deduction last year, your donation will automatically “roll over” this year. Please visit the e-pledge system and begin by clicking “Forgot user ID or password” to continue or raise your pledge amount from last year. Other helpful links are listed below.

Thank you for your generosity each year. Let's continue to make this campaign a success. Remember, you must log into the electronic pledge system to make your pledge. 2023 SEFA Campaign: 'Why We Give' Segment

Posted:

“I would donate to a charity within SEFA regardless, as countless people suffer from such horrible diseases that require more research dollars so they can be studied in hopes of a cure, or at least better treatment.  Specifically, my sister was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 26 years ago, and so my donation goes to the National MS Association. While I cannot say for certain that anything of significant impact to her has been developed, I can say that she is grateful for my contribution to this cause.”
— Kelly Marczynski

We warmly invite you to share your reasons for giving, and we'll feature them in the Daily until the end of the SEFA Campaign on December 14. Please send your thoughts to campaign co-chairs Wendy Paterson, dean of the School of Education, or Maria C. Garrity, senior systems programmer in Information Technology. Let's maintain our momentum, as together, we can achieve this! To donate, please go to the e-pledge system and click "Forgot user ID or password" to begin the process, even if you are rolling over your pledge from last year because it is not automatic. This instructional video and documentation can further guide you.  If you prefer to donate by cash or check please complete the paper form (PDF, 4 MB) and submit it to the School of Education, Bacon Hall 306, or to your departmental ambassador. Here is the list of designated charities for your convenience. Thank you.
