Clarification on Use of Special Request Form in Bengal Buy

Posted:

In order to facilitate a better understanding of when campus users should use the Special Request Form in Bengal Buy, the following clarification is being issued to assist in making the determination.

Use of the Special Request Form is for very specific and limited types of orders and payments. Bengal Buy does not convert the Special Request Form into an external Purchase Order. Because of this, and in order to be compliant with OSC regulations, campus users should take note of the following:

The form is allowable only for the following types of purchases, with an invoice in hand, and when the total is less than $10,000:

  • Arbitration fees
  • Certifications and accreditations
  • Program accreditation
  • Professional certifications
  • Emergencies (health and safety)
  • Memberships or associations
  • NYS construction advertising
  • Registrations for conferences
  • Subscriptions for periodicals (e.g., the Buffalo News)
  • Utilities

Please email Procurement Services with questions.

Student Organizations and Involvement Opportunities

Posted:

Buffalo State recognizes that student organizations are an important part of the university experience. The learning experiences that are gained from being in a student organization complement Buffalo State's commitment to the intellectual, personal, and professional growth of its students. Student organizations enhance the co-curricular education of Buffalo State students to empower them to succeed and are charged with providing meaningful, fulfilling, and culturally enriching contributions to the campus community.

Student Leadership and Engagement supports roughly 70 student organizations on campus with over 50 social and academic organizations, 12 Greek-lettered organizations, and 10 honor societies. Our office registers all student organizations annually and oversees the registration process for all new student organizations that wish to be affiliated with the university. We offer numerous services to all student organizations, including the Bengal Stripes Leadership Program, advisement, space reservations, and organizational development.

Does your academic or campus department support a club or organization not listed as a registered student organization? Please contact Student Leadership and Engagement to learn how to register your organization and get connected with students on campus!

Bengal Connect and the Corq App
Bengal Connect provides students with the opportunity to connect with campus clubs and organizations, learn about programs and events taking place on campus, and learn how to get involved when attending Buffalo State. Faculty, staff, and students can log on using their Buffalo State username and password.

The Corq app allows students, staff, faculty, and the community to find events and student organizations around campus from their mobile devices. It is a great tool to find things to do. You can search by the type of activity you are interested in the arts, music, athletics, cultural, learning, service, social, spirituality, and more. You can sort events chronologically. You can even find events that offer free food!

Student Organization Advisors Needed

Posted:

Faculty and staff advisers play an integral role in the success of student organizations at Buffalo State. They offer guidance to student leaders through their experience and lend continuity to the organization. Each year Student Leadership and Engagement receives multiple requests from students to create new organizations on campus. At times these organizations are without a faculty or staff advisor and are unsure where to look in order to fill the role. In addition, returning student organizations may find themselves in a situation where the advisor position has become vacant and needs to be filled.

The following student organizations are without a faculty or staff advisor:

  • Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority
  • Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha Sorority
  • Sigma Delta Tau Sorority
  • Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority

Roles and responsibilities of advisors include the following:

  • Must be a full-time faculty or staff member. Graduate assistants or interns are not eligible to serve as student organization advisers.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the student organization's mission, values, and history, lending continuity to the organization.
  • Must be aware of and attend (when necessary) activities, meetings, and programs sponsored by the student organization.
  • Must build trust with the student organization and establish guidelines for their role as adviser.
  • Must encourage members to assume responsibility for their actions and effectiveness of their programs.
  • Must guide while at the same time allow freedom for members to plan and coordinate their own activities and programs.
  • Must provide knowledge and information relevant to the needs of the organization through expertise and experience.

If you are interested in serving as an advisor to one or more of the organizations listed, please email Luke Haumesser, associate director of student leadership and engagement.

Greek Life Spring Recruitment

Posted:

Greek Life at Buffalo State is dedicated to enhancing the development of students through membership in our Greek organizations. Each fraternity and sorority offers students an opportunity to be part of a close-knit community that promotes leadership, service, and academic excellence. Our staff supports initiatives dedicated to scholarship, service, community advocacy, philanthropy, safety, and wellness.

Buffalo State recognizes that membership and new member recruitment is an essential component of the fraternity and sorority experience. For chapters to survive, they must continually recruit new members. It is expected that each fraternity and sorority will enhance the experience of each new or prospective member by providing membership education programming that meets university requirements.

All recognized fraternities and sororities are required to follow Buffalo State's Greek Life recognition policy, recruitment and new member protocols, and recruitment calendar.

All students interested in joining a Greek-letter organization must meet certain criteria before the start of the new member education and intake process:

  • Students must be at least second-semester first-year students with 12 completed college credit hours.
  • Students must be registered as full-time students at Buffalo State University.
  • Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be in good academic standing.
  • Students must be deemed eligible for membership by the recognized Greek-letter organization.

Greek Interest Meeting Requirement
All students interested in joining a fraternity or sorority must attend one of the Greek Interest Meetings sponsored by Student Leadership and Engagement at the beginning of each semester and before the start of intake and new member education activities.

Please contact Student Leadership and Engagement, (716) 878-4631, with questions about Greek Life and spring recruitment.
