Tell Students: Tax Assistance Program

Posted:

The Dr. Katherine S. Conway-Turner Civic and Community Engagement Office (CCE) will offer free self-assisted tax return preparation sessions in partnership with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. This Tax Assistance Program (TAP) opportunity will allow you to complete and file your New York state and federal taxes.

All sessions will be in person. The Department of Taxation and Finance staff will provide an overview of the computer software, and you will have time to complete your filing with small-group support from their volunteer auditors.

Appointments are held on Fridays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and are 60-to-90-minutes long. Sessions run through Friday, April 12. The program is open to any member of the campus and Buffalo communities. Please share this information with students, alumni, or community partners.

Capacity is limited, and advance registration is required. Please register for an on-campus session to reserve a computer lab space. You will receive a confirmation email; details of what you need to bring and instructions about parking will be sent to you a day or two before your registered session.

Additional locations for other areas of the state and WNY community are listed on the CCE website.

Please visit the website for answers to frequently asked questions. Further questions can be directed to Civic and Community Engagement or call (716) 878-3919.

Registrar's Office: How to Register for a Class After an Override is Granted

Posted:

If an override is granted in Banner, the student must then attempt to register for the course again by entering the CRN on the ADD CLASSES WORKSHEET at the bottom of the ADD OR DROP CLASSES page and SUBMIT. The student must select SUBMIT to be successful.

Students should not attempt to search for the section using LOOK UP CLASSES. The course may not appear available especially if it is closed because it has reached maximum enrollment capacity.

Learn more: Banner Student Registration Guide.

Students are strongly encouraged to use Schedule Planner. Schedule Planner is the only tool that students can use to search for OPEN CLASSES (classes that have seats available for registration). Schedule Planner simplifies and decreases the amount of time spent on planning an ideal schedule.

Spring Classes Begin January 27: Verify Schedules in Banner

Posted:

Now is the time for students to verify their schedule in Banner. If they are waiting on a response from an instructor, they should attempt to contact the instructor now. If the instructor is not available, they can call the department office and ask if someone can assist them.

If a student is on a waitlist for a course, they should check the schedule to see if another section has seats available. It is always a best practice to secure a seat in a course as soon as possible and not wait until the start of the semester.

Students should be sure to review their schedule BEFORE attempting to go to class to be sure there hasn't been a room change for a class. This is important to do for the first few weeks of the semester start.

Most questions can be answered on the Registrar's Office Registration webpage.

Changes requiring instructor assistance should be completed no later than Friday, January 24. Registration ends Tuesday, February 4 at 11:59 p.m. If a student is attending a class that does not show on their Banner Student Detail Schedule, the student must add the class as soon as possible, but no later than February 4.

If a student decides they do not want a course, it is their responsibility and very important to drop the course as soon as possible. Non-attendance does not equate to a drop. If a student no longer wants a class, they must drop the course no later than February 4 and review their Student Detail Schedule for accuracy. Failure to drop a registered course that a student does not attend will result in a final grade of E.

There are no drops after February 4. Starting February 5, to leave a class the student must withdraw online in Banner. February 4 is the last day to leave a class without financial penalty. Refund percentages based on date of withdrawal, are available on the Student Accounts Refunds and Financial Liability webpage.

As always, students, faculty, and staff may contact the Registrar's Office via email or call (716) 878-4811.
