Cynthia Burnett, assistant professor of creative studies, will present a keynote address on how technology is changing the way we create and solve problems at a breakout session on integrating creativity across disciplines at the 2012 State of Creativity Forum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on November 12 and 13.

The Burchfield Penney Art Center website, launched in December 2011, has received a W³ Award for creative excellence on the web. The award recognizes the creative and marketing professionals behind award-winning sites, videos, and marketing programs.

Winning entries for the W³ Awards are selected by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The IAVA oversees all judging and provides strategic direction for the awards. The IAVA is a membership-based organization of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media. Entries were judged on the factors of creativity, usability, navigation, functionality, visual design, and ease of use.

The Burchfield Penney's website was designed by White Bicycle and developed by Ingenious Inc.

Jeffrey Hirschberg, Television and Film Arts

Maxed Out, an original screenplay written by Jeffrey Hirschberg, associate professor and director of the television and film arts program, was awarded Top 10 Percent status at the Austin Film Festival (out of 6,500 screenplays submitted throughout the world). Hirschberg has been invited to the festival's annual conference in Austin, Texas, later this month.

A short film adaptation of the screenplay, written and directed by Hirschberg and produced by Hirschberg and Lou Rera, associate professor of communication, was named an official selection at the Friars Club Comedy Film Festival (FCCFF) and will be shown during the festival in New York City October 24–27. The FCCFF is a star-studded celebration of the comedy genre in the heart of New York.

Marianne Foley, associate librarian and former campus ANGEL database administrator, published her article “Putting the Library at Students’ Fingertips” in the Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship (24) 3: 167–176. The journal provides a forum for the presentation of peer-reviewed research and the latest news related to electronic resources and the digital environment. Foley’s article describes the widget she created to give students one-click access to the library’s online resources from within ANGEL courses.

Carol Townsend, Design

Carol Townsend, associate professor of design and coordinator of design foundations, was one of eight people selected by poet Neil Shepard to participate in his advanced workshop "The Whole Poem," held at the Chautauqua Institution's Writers' Center from July 16 to 20. Shepard is the longtime editor of the literary journal Green Mountains Review.

The July poet-in-residence at the Writers' Center, Jim Daniels, selected Townsend as the Spotlight reader from his workshop "Writing and Art: Shared Inspiration." Her poem was titled "Dissecting Musée des Beaux Arts."

Townsend was also selected as a reader in the Chautauqua Institution's "Third Annual Favorite Poem Project," which was started as an offshoot of poet laureate Robert Pinsky's 2009 visit to the institution.

Anthony Bannon, executive director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, received the J. Dudley Johnston Award for major achievement in the field of photographic criticism or the history of photography from Britain’s Royal Photographic Society during the 2012 Royal Photographic Society International Awards ceremony held last week in London, England.

The Royal Photographic Society International Awards have been bestowed since 1878 to individuals who have made significant contributions to the art and science of photography. A full press release is available at www.burchfieldpenney.org.
