Michael I. Niman, associate professor, Communication, delivered the closing keynote address at the 37th Annual Eastern Community College Social Science Association conference hosted by Erie Community College in Buffalo from March 31 to April 2.
Lyubov Burlakova, research scientist, and Alexander Karatayev, director, both with the Great Lakes Center, recently published, with coauthors, two peer-reviewed articles on the conservation of freshwater mollusks. “Endemic species: contribution to community uniqueness, effect of habitat alteration, and conservation priorities” appeared in Biological Conservation 144: 155-165. “Biogeography and conservation of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) in Texas: Patterns of diversity and threats” was published online on March 16.
Donna Jordan Dusel, lecturer in the Fine Arts Department, and Gerald C. Mead Jr., lecturer in the Design Department, were guest speakers at “An Evening to Celebrate the Life of the Late Dr. Charles Rand Penney: From Burchfield to Betty Boop.” The event was held at the Garret Club in Buffalo on January 13.
Ted Schmidt, associate professor, Economics and Finance, presented “Finance is Killing Us...Literally” at the 37th Annual Eastern Community College Social Science Association conference on April 1 at Erie Community College.
Susan Baldwin, CHES, assistant professor, Health and Wellness, published “Perceptions of International Faculty in the United States,” with coauthors Phoebe Constantinou and Srijana Bajracharya from Ithaca College in the International Journal of Science in Society.
Deborah A. Silverman, assistant professor, Communication, served as a judge for the national Public Relations Society of America’s 2011 Silver Anvil Awards, regarded as the Oscars of the public relations industry, on March 25 in New York City.
Artwork by Gerald Mead, lecturer, Design, will be published in the forthcoming textbook Exploring Color Photography: From Film to Pixels (fifth edition, Elsevier Focal Press). Mead’s work was exhibited at the Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts in Ekaterinburg, Russia, in a Buffalo artist exchange exhibition (November 1–30). He also received a Volunteer Recognition Award from the Kenan Center in Lockport, curated the exhibition Thresholds of Visibility: A Survey of Miniature Art at Studio Hart in Buffalo (October 1–November 4), and juried entries for the ImageArt exhibition at Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester (October 1–24).
Gerald Mead, lecturer, Design, juried the Northeast Regional Contemporary Fiber Exhibition for the Rochester Contemporary Art Center on February 5, and the 41st Annual 100 American Craftsmen exhibition for the Kenan Center in Lockport, New York, on February 26. He also served as the art auction chair for Western New York AmeriCorps’ annual event “Sweetheart for Service” on February 10.
Susan E. McMillen, professor, Mathematics; Pixita del Prado Hill, associate professor, Elementary Education and Reading; and Ellen Friedland, associate professor, Elementary Education and Reading, had their study “Literacy Strategies in Mathematics Instruction: A Look at New York State Classrooms” published in the December 2010 issue of the New York State Mathematics Teachers’ Journal.
Staci Newmahr, assistant professor, Sociology, launched her first book on February 1. Playing on the Edge: Sadomasochism, Risk, and Intimacy has been published by Indiana University Press. She will hold a book signing at Barnes and Noble at Buffalo State Bookstore on Thursday, February 17, at 12:30 p.m.
