Lyubov Burlakova, research scientist, and Alexander Karatayev, director, both with the Great Lakes Center, recently published, with coauthors, two peer-reviewed articles on the conservation of freshwater mollusks. “Endemic species: contribution to community uniqueness, effect of habitat alteration, and conservation priorities” appeared in Biological Conservation 144: 155-165. “Biogeography and conservation of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) in Texas: Patterns of diversity and threats” was published online on March 16.

Mead Jr., lecturer in the Design Department, were guest speakers at “An Evening to Celebrate the Life of the Late Dr. Charles Rand Penney: From Burchfield to Betty Boop.” The event was held at the Garret Club in Buffalo on January 13.

Gerald Mead, Design

Posted:

Artwork by Gerald Mead, lecturer, Design, will be published in the forthcoming textbook Exploring Color Photography: From Film to Pixels (fifth edition, Elsevier Focal Press). Mead’s work was exhibited at the Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts in Ekaterinburg, Russia, in a Buffalo artist exchange exhibition (November 1–30). He also received a Volunteer Recognition Award from the Kenan Center in Lockport, curated the exhibition Thresholds of Visibility: A Survey of Miniature Art at Studio Hart in Buffalo (October 1–November 4), and juried entries for the ImageArt exhibition at Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester (October 1–24).

Gerald Mead, lecturer, Design, juried the Northeast Regional Contemporary Fiber Exhibition for the Rochester Contemporary Art Center on February 5, and the 41st Annual 100 American Craftsmen exhibition for the Kenan Center in Lockport, New York, on February 26. He also served as the art auction chair for Western New York AmeriCorps’ annual event “Sweetheart for Service” on February 10.
