Maria Garrity, systems programmer, Computing and Technology Services, was team captain for Team Computing at Your Service, which won first place for the fastest faculty/staff team in the 14th Annual Bengal 5K Scholarship Run and Fun Walk on March 19. For the eighth year in a row, team member Andrew T. Garrity, programmer/analyst with Computing and Technology Services, won first place in the faculty/staff category. Other team members were Judi Basinski, Ralph Chille, Kim Chmielewicz, Andrew Garrity, Leonard Goerss, Churchill Gwan, John Hejna, Valerie Lehman, Ivar Lupkin, Gloria Lupkin, Ted Marsowicz, Neil Palmer, Bryan Penberthy, Sheila Pragel, Roxanne Sarver, Betty Spencer, JoAnna Stergion, Ottilie Woodruff, and Michael Woodruff.

 

The Bengal 5K benefits the Alumni Association's Legacy Scholarship Fund and the Armed Services Scholarship Fund. Legacy scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students who are the children or grandchildren of Buffalo State graduates. The Armed Services Scholarship provides funding for student veterans at Buffalo State.

Gounard, director, International Student Affairs, and vice president for advocacy for the Western New York/Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association, spoke on future projects and funding of the Fulbright Program at the Spring Fulbright Conference of the chapter held at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, on April 8.

Daniel W. Cunningham, professor, Mathematics, has been notified that his paper “Scales of minimal complexity in K(R)” has been accepted for publication in the refereed journal Archive for Mathematical Logic. This journal publishes original research in logic and set theory.

Sue McMillen, professor, Mathematics, and Ellen Friedland, associate professor, Elementary Education and Reading, presented “Ordering for Success: Integrating Literacy Strategies and Graphic Organizers to Teach Mathematics Content” at the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics annual conference in Indianapolis. Their presentation came from their recent work on literacy in secondary mathematics instruction. Pixita Del Prado Hill, who also collaborated on this research, is currently on sabbatical in Chile.

Sharon F. Cramer, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor, Exceptional Education, was one of the presenters at the “Power of SUNY: Presentations by Innovation and Transformation Teams” held on April 8 in Albany. She is chair of one the subcommittees of the Shared Governance Transformation Team.

Ellen Friedland, associate professor, Elementary Education and Reading; Sue McMillen, professor, Mathematics; and Pixita Del Prado Hill, associate professor, Elementary Education and Reading, have been collaborating on several projects concerning integrating literacy strategies in mathematics instruction. "Moving beyond the word wall: How middle school teachers use literacy strategies” (2010–11) describes one aspect of their research. It was published in NCSM Journal of Mathematics Education Leadership 13 (1): 6–18.
