Lisa Berglund, associate professor, English, has been awarded two highly competitive fellowships: a Michael J. Connell Fellowship at the Huntington Library (July 2008) and a Donald and Mary Hyde Fellowship for the Study of Dr. Samuel Johnson and his Circle at the Houghton Library at Harvard (2009). Berglund will be working on editions of the works of Johnson’s friend and biographer Hester Lynch Piozzi and researching annotations in early-nineteenth-century dictionaries.

Stephen Saracino, professor, Design, is one of just 20 metalsmiths from across the United States to participate in a national invitational exhibition, ...of lineage and legacy: visual conversations on jewelry and metalworks,part of the annual Society of North American Goldsmiths convention, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, March 5–8. Curated by Gail Brown, the exhibition will be on view February 29–March 31 in the college’s Hall Street Gallery.

Jagat J. Mukherjee, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Lab, Great Lakes Center

Jagat J. Mukherjee, research scientist, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Lab, Great Lakes Center, has received a three-year grant award from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) totaling $214,500 for a project titled “Phenolic Component of Tobacco Smoke as Tumor Promoter.” Mukherjee also published a paper titled “Inhibition of Benzopyrene Diol Epoxide-Induced Apoptosis by Cadmium(II) Is AP-1-Independent: Role of Extracelluler Signal Related Kinase” in the journal Chemico-Biological Interactions (2007, in press, doi:10.1016/j.cbi.2007.11.002). Coauthors are Suresh Gupta and Subodh Kumar from the Great Lakes Center.

Dan MacIsaac, associate professor, Physics, presented a 30-minute invited presentation, “A Modest Proposal: Addressing the Physics Teacher Shortage by Master’s-Level Cross and Alternative Certification into Physics Teaching,” at the 2008 national Winter Meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in Baltimore, Maryland, January 19–23. The paper was coauthored by MacIsaac; David Henry, associate professor; and Kathleen Falconer, lecturer, Elementary Education and Reading.

Grant, associate dean for teacher education, University at Buffalo, presented their paper, “Bridging the Perceived Divide: Teachers, Researchers, and Alternative Assessments of Students’ Historical Knowledge and Understanding,” at the 87th annual conference of the College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies in San Diego, California, November 28–30.

Susan Baldwin, Health and Wellness

Susan Baldwin, assistant professor, Health and Wellness, was appointed to serve on the board of directors for the GIRLS (Goals, Integrity, Respect, Leadership, and Sports) Sport Foundation of Greater Buffalo in August 2008. The foundation’s mission is to promote the importance of respect, self-confidence, a healthy lifestyle, teamwork, academics, and good sportsmanship through sports participation among girls. All programs focus on fostering these skills in underprivileged girls ages 4–18 across the city of Buffalo. The group was invited to Buffalo State on January 12 to view the women’s ice hockey game, basketball game, and swim meet, where they were oriented to Buffalo State College and higher education athletics and academics. John Thompson, associate professor, Computer Information Systems, co-chaired the Texas Computer Education Association’s second annual Educational Technology Research Symposium, held in Austin, Texas, on February 5. Thompson also presented a paper, “Technology Terms: A Study in Correct Spelling,” at the seventh annual International Conference on Teaching and Learning at Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York, January 10 and 11.
