Lisa Marie Anselmi, assistant professor, Anthropology, presented her paper “The Martin II Site: An Early Woodland Lithic Manufacturing Locality on the Niagara Frontier” at the 73rd annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology, March 26–30, in Vancouver, British Columbia. While in Vancouver, she also conducted research on copper-based metals, wooden artifacts, and textiles at the Royal British Columbia Museum and the University of British Comumbia’s Museum of Anthropology.

Lori L. Til, Hospitality and Tourism

Lori L. Till, associate professor, Hospitality and Tourism, served as a visiting site team member April 6–9 on behalf of the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) for the initial review of the North Carolina Central University School of Business Hospitality and Tourism Administration Program. Currently, 36 out of more than 400 baccalaureate degree programs in hospitality nationwide are accredited by ACPHA. The Buffalo State Hospitality and Tourism Department received ACPHA accreditation in August 2007.

Musa Abdul Hakim, E. H. Butler Library

Musa Abdul Hakim, associate librarian, E. H. Butler Library, was among Africana librarians from Columbia, Duke, Princeton, the University of Wisconsin, and the Library of Congress who attended a meeting on the Aluka Digital Library in New York City on March 28. The purpose of the consultative meeting was to gather feedback on the content that is currently available in the Aluka Digital Library, identify priority areas for additional content, think together about how best to make this growing resource available to scholars in the higher education community, and discuss recent updates to Aluka.

Hakim presented an exhibit, lecture, film, and slide show in two presentations titled “Rescuing Those Magnificent Endangered Desert Edge Libraries of Timbuktu and Beyond: Three Contemporary Explorers” at the International Institute of Buffalo on March 22 and 29.

An exhibit by Hakim, “Breaking the Silences on the Holocaust of Slavery: Remembering the Multiple Legacies of Enslavement and Trade in Africa’s Human Population,” was on display in Butler Library during February, and at the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library during March. A reception and lecture for the exhibit was held at Merriweather on March 24. The exhibit was featured as the lead story in the Buffalo Challenger on March 12.

Gounard, director, International Student Affairs, and vice president for advocacy, Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association, spoke on future projects and funding of the Fulbright Program at the Spring Fulbright Conference of the chapter, held at Daemen College on April 4.

Zawicki, assistant professor, Earth Sciences and Science Education, presented a peer-reviewed paper titled “The Pedagogical Beliefs and Values of Physics Alternative Certification Teacher Candidates” at the 2008 annual international conference of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, held in Baltimore, Maryland, March 30–April 2.

Zawicki, assistant professor, Earth Sciences and Science Education, presented a peer-reviewed paper titled “The Pedagogical Beliefs and Values of Physics Alternative Certification Teacher Candidates” at the 2008 annual international conference of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, held in Baltimore, Maryland, March 30–April 2.

Elisa Bergslien, Earth Sciences and Science Education

Elisa Bergslien, assistant professor, Earth Sciences and Science Education, is the primary author of a paper published in the March issue of Forensic Science International 175 (2–3): 218–226. The paper, “Identification of Cremains Using X-ray Diffraction Spectroscopy and a Comparison to Trace Element Analysis,” was the product of a collaboration with Mary Bush, assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, and Peter Bush, director of the South Campus Instrument Center, at the University at Buffalo’s School of Dental Medicine. Forensic Science International is one of the leading forensic science journals.

Sally Arnold, associate professor, Speech-Language Pathology, presented her paper “A Survey of Undergraduate College Students Concerning the Risk of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss from Portable Music Players” at the 2008 annual meeting of the American Academy of Audiology, in Charlotte, North Carolina, April 3–5. Coauthors were former graduate students Andrea Nabozny and Heather White.
