Jill Norvilitis, associate professor, Psychology; andZhang Jie, professor, Sociology, and director, Center for China Studies, published their article “Self-Reported Symptoms of ADHD Among College Students in China and the United States” in the Journal of Attention Disorders 11 (5): 558–567. Coauthors on the article were Travis Ingersoll, an undergraduate student in psychology, and Jia Shuhua, a visiting scholar to Buffalo State from China.

Eileen Merberg, retention and leadership specialist, Residence Life, presented two workshop sessions at the Western New York Student Leadership Conference, held at UB on February 23: “Facilitating Trust Through Effective Group Behavior” and “The Leadership Practices Inventory: How to Turn Challenging Opportunities into Remarkable Success.” Twenty students from Buffalo State attended this regional conference.
Susan Hall, lecturer, Educational Foundations, successfully defended her dissertation for her Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University at Buffalo in December. Her dissertation was titled “Faculty Attitudes and Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Traditional Versus Distance Methods of Delivery in Pre-Service Business Education Programs.”
Robert Wood, professor, Design, has put together a solo exhibition of recent clay, glass, and mixed-media sculptures that was originally exhibited at the Arthur Butcher Gallery at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, October 11–November 9, 2007. In conjunction with the invitational exhibition, Wood presented an artist workshop and slide lecture on his work. The exhibition traveled to the Pierce Art Gallery at West Virginia University Institute of Technology, in Montgomery, West Virginia, November 12–December 1, where he also gave an artist slide lecture on his artwork. The exhibition was then picked up by the Sisson Art Gallery at Henry Ford Community College, in Dearborn, Michigan, January 14–March 10, where Wood will give an artist workshop this month. Other recent activities include an invitational outdoor sculpture installation in the Brodie Sculpture Garden at SUNY Geneseo. In February, Wood was co-juror for the 100 American Craftsmen exhibition that will take place at the Kenan Center in Lockport this summer.
John Thompson, associate professor, Computer Information Systems, presented an online workshop, “Dynamic Collaboration, Discussion and Facilitation Practices,” with two instructors from other colleges for the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) February 27–March 7.
John Song, Professor, Criminal Justice, is the lead author on an article titled “Perceptions of Policing: A Comparison of Vietnamese and Latino Immigrant Communities,” with Guadalupe Vidales and John Dombrink, published in Law Enforcement Executive Forum 8 (1): 85–107. Song also coauthored a paper with Doris Chu of Arkansas State, “Chinese Immigrants’ Perceptions of the Police in Toronto, Canada,” which has been accepted for publication in Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management, published by the University of Cincinnati.
Joseph Territo, supervisor of grounds and manager of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum, Campus Services, taught a class titled “Hazard Trees” for the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County’s 2008 Horticulture School on March 20. The class covered all aspects of hazardous trees and lessons learned from the October 2006 storm in Buffalo.
Constance Nowak, lecturer, Design, has been a set designer for the March of Dimes “Gourmet Gala” for the past 25 years. This year’s cooking station design in the theme of An American in Paris took first place for “Theme Design Excellence.” The event took place at the Adam’s Mark grand ballroom the weekend of March 15. The cooking station was an 8-foot-by-8-foot freestanding work area where celebrity chefs prepared items from the cocktail/dinner menu. Nowak’s chefs were Robin Wolfgang of Time Warner Cable and her husband, who dressed in period attire. The set included a replica of the Eiffel Tower, an impressionist-style painting, which Nowak created, and special lighting effects in the café setting. The film and soundtrack from An American in Paris played in the background, completing the ambience. The attention to detail has distinguished her sets as winning designs.
Nowak’s set designs have previously won awards for excellence in technical design and creative design. Nowak is working with colleagues from the Interior Design Department to have students design, plan, and construct one or more cooking station sets for next year’s event.
