Jane Cushman, assistant professor, Jodelle Magner,assistant professor, and Susan McMillen, associate professor, Mathematics, presented “P3: Property-Opoly and Other Powerful Preservice Field Experiences” at the fifth annual TEAM-Math Conference, held at Tuskegee University, in Tuskegee, Alabama, September 4–6. The presentation highlighted the field experiences of the presenters’ mathematics education majors as they progress from an early field experience course through methods of teaching mathematics courses.

MacPherson, professor of geography and director of the Canada-United States Trade Center, University at Buffalo, published a paper, “The Competitive Characteristics of US Firms in the Industrial Design Sector: Empirical Evidence from a National Survey,” in the international refereed journalCompetition & Change 12(3): 262–280.

John Thompson’s students in the educational technology program—Justin Baryza; Esther Campbell;Sean Connors, staff assistant, Continuing Professional Studies; Kathleen McDonald; and Edward Tromble—provided a $5,000 “technology makeover” for a classroom in St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo. The makeover of Kirsten Helm’s secondary social studies classroom included an interactive whiteboard and pad, a clicker system, a document projector, an LCD projector, and a desktop computer. The project was a collaboration between Buffalo State College, St. Mary’s, eInstruction, Computers for Children, and Ingram Micro. Training on the new technology for Helm and her students was provided by eInstruction’s Bill Naab. Subsequently, St. Mary’s secured a grant from the Variety Club through HSBC Bank to create several additional technology-equipped classrooms using Helm’s classroom as a model.

Al Riess, Librarian, E. H. Butler Library, recently marked his 20th year as a radio-show host on Buffalo State’s WBNY-FM 91.3. He started with a folk/ethnic/world music program that ran for nearly 15 years. Currently, Riess hosts “The Saturday Morning C-JAM: The Classics of Jazz and More” on Saturdays from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., and follows up with “Rhythm, Roots, & Rock ’n’ Roll” from 11:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Satasha Green, assistant professor, Exceptional Education; Hibajene Shandomo, assistant professor, Elementary Education and Reading; Amitra Wall,associate professor, Sociology; Myrtle Welch, assistant professor, Elementary Education and Reading; andKathy Wood, associate professor, Elementary Education and Reading, and director, Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education, presented papers (narratives) related to “Identity, Affirmation, Equity, and Navigation in Higher Education” at the 56th annual New York State Sociological Association conference. Green focused on valuing nontraditional research. Shandomo asserted that mentorship needs to be redefined. Wall discussed the personal responsibilities of “making it.” Welch described challenges related to journeying from the plantation to academia. Wood suggested that equity of support within departments is needed.

Timothy L. Gallineau, associate professor, Student Personnel Administration, presented at the statewide Graduate School Awareness Conference, held at the University at Buffalo on October 11. Gallineau’s presentation dealt with careers in higher education. Twenty-six colleges and universities were represented, and 500 undergraduate students attended the conference.
