At the meeting of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, held in Kansas City, Missouri, May 30–June 4,Jean F. Gounard, director, International Student Affairs, chaired the annual business meeting of the NAFSA Francophone World Special Interest group, where subsequently he was re-elected chair of the group. During that meeting, official representatives from French Embassies in Ottawa and Washington, D.C., as well as official representatives from CampusFrance spoke on “European Reforms and New Trends in French Higher Education.” The meeting also marked the ninth anniversary of the signature of the Memorandum of Friendship between NAFSA and l’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie initiated by Gounard in 2001, as chair of the NAFSA Francophone World Special Interest Group.

Ellie Fleetwood, research administrator, Center for Health and Social Research, successfully completed the Certified Research Administrator (CRA) examination through the Research Administrators Certification Council in May. Fleetwood joins William Wieczorek, director, Center for Health and Social Research, among the ranks of Certified Research Administrators on campus and throughout the country.

Reva Fish, assistant professor, Educational Foundations, presented her research, “Education Intensity and the Academic Benefits of Attending Preschool,” in a session titled “Early Childhood Programs that Can Make a Difference” at the American Educational Research Association’s annual meeting in Denver, Colorado, April 30–May 4. She also chaired a working group that considered “What Neuroscience Tells Us about Complex Ecologies of Learning” during multiple sessions at the annual meeting. In the coming year, members of the group are going to explore strategies to integrate neuroscience principles in preservice teachers' training programs.

George T. Hole, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, Philosophy and Humanities, read his paper “Oedipus at the Trial of Socrates” at the Western New York–Western Pennsylvania Regional Meeting of the American Catholic Philosophical Association, held at Canisius College in April.

An article by Jeffrey D. Zacko-Smith, assistant professor, Creative Studies, and coordinator, leadership minor, was accepted for publication in the summer 2010 expanded edition (leadership focus) of the Academic Exchange Quarterly. The article, “The Three-T’s Framework for Leadership Education,” describes a schema that can be used to understand and teach leadership theory.

An article by Mark K. Warford, associate professor, Modern and Classical Languages, “Gramática y Cultura en la Lengua Extranjera: Empezando en las Zonas de Mayor Resistencia,” will be published in an upcoming issue of the refereed journal Hispania (vol. 93.2).

Ramona Santa Maria, assistant professor, Computer Information Systems, has published her paper “Schools and the Hybrid Technologist: A ‘New’ Employment Arena that Straddles Both White- and Blue-Collar Positions” in the International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society (vol. 6).

Gerald Mead was a co-recipient of a 2010 Silver ADDY Award from the Advertising Club of Buffalo for “Handmade in Buffalo,” a publication he authored for the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau (March 19). Several of his collages were reproduced in the Winter 2009–2010 issue of Yellow Edenwald Field, a literary magazine published by Buffalo Ochre Papers. A solo exhibition of Mead’s work was presented in the Nichols School Gallery (March 12–May 11), and he was included in the following group exhibitions: Presidential at Indigo Gallery (February 1–March 1); What I Do Best at Art Dialogue Gallery (January 9–February 5); Spirituality at El Museo Gallery (December 4–February 12); and Visual AIDS: Postcards from the Edge at the Zieher Smith Gallery in New York City (January 8–10).

A recent photograph by Stephen Houseknecht,lecturer, Fine Arts, titled Photo Realist Wing: Bomber Diptych, is included in the exhibition Made In NY 2010, on view at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, New York, through May 16. Seventy-three works by 58 New York state artists were selected from 544 submissions by 282 artists. Jurors were Joan Lyons and John von Bergen. Houseknecht also has a solo exhibition of photographs from the series It Can’t Happen Hereopening at Buffalo Big Print on June 4.

Lori L. Till, associate professor, Hospitality and Tourism, was a member of the national accreditation site team that represented the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) to review the Kent State University hospitality management program for reaccreditation from March 14 to 17. Only 20 percent of baccalaureate hospitality management programs in the United States are ACPHA accredited. Buffalo State’s hospitality administration program was accredited by ACPHA in 2007.
