Joseph, Theater

Joseph Price, associate professor, Theater, recently directed a reading of the new play Insidious by Ibn Shabazz for Road Less Traveled Productions in Buffalo. Price will direct the world premiere of The Velvet Rut by James Still at the Unicorn Theatre January 28–February 22. Still, an award-winning playwright, was featured in the October issue of American Theatre.

Elizabeth, Art Conservation

Elizabeth Peña, director and professor, Art Conservation, recently returned from a monthlong course, “Sharing Conservation Decisions,” in Italy. She was one of just 22 participants selected from around the world and the only American. Sponsored by theInternational Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, the workshop focused on decision-making in the interdisciplinary field of cultural heritage and included a collaborative case study at the Sacro Monte di Varallo in the Italian Alps, a site visit to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, and a behind-the-scenes visit to Herculaneum. While there, Peña served as a visiting scholar at the American Academy in Rome.

CASE is the professional organization for advancement professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, fundraising, marketing, and other advancement areas. The largest of the eight CASE regional districts, District II helps members build stronger relationships with their alumni and donors, raise funds for campus projects, produce recruitment materials, market their institutions to prospective students, diversify the profession, and foster public support of education. Kimberly Blessing, chair and associate professor, Philosophy and Humanities, presented “Acting with Cartesian Resolve” at the annual meeting of the Creighton Club (New York State Philosophical Association) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, in Geneva, New York, in October.

Amitra A., Communication

Associate professors Amitra Wall, Sociology, and Joe Marren, Communication, and eight students from various Buffalo State departments participated in Sojourn to the Past’s 10-day Civil Rights Educational Project from January 8 to 17. The experiential journey featured sites in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Among the visited sites were Dr. King’s gravesite and the King Center in Atlanta; the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama; the 16th Street Baptist Church and National Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham, Alabama; Medgar Evers’s home in Jackson, Mississippi; and Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, where the group heard from two members of the Little Rock Nine, who shared their wisdom and bravery. Participating students were Guyshana Alston, Aminata Camara, Taja Cox, Travis Grodin, April Johnson, Devone Moore, Sametra Toe, and Nese Yazicilar. John Thompson, associate professor, Computer Information Systems, presented a concurrent session, “Green Computing: Save Energy, Save Money!” at FETC 2009 in Orlando, Florida, January 21–24. FETC is one of the largest educational technology conferences in the United States.
