Buffalo Food Policy Summit II: Information Fair and Public Forum

Posted:

The Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities Buffalo Partnership (an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), the University at Buffalo, Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Inc., and SUNY Buffalo State, in collaboration with other local organizations, will host a Public Forum and Info Fair as part of the two-day Buffalo Food Policy Summit on Wednesday, October 23, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The event is free and open to the public.

The Public Forum and Info Fair will be a festive gathering with a short program and brief remarks by international food policy expert Wayne Roberts. Kicking off the event at 5:00 p.m. is Just Lead, an HKHC Youth Advisors Council event for improved school meals in Buffalo.

This event will also introduce the Food Policy Council (FPC) of Buffalo and Erie County to policymakers and residents and describe how they can engage with the new council in creating a more just and sustainable food
system. In particular, this event will create an awareness of the role that our new FPC can play on behalf of
residents. The event also seeks to gauge the food issues that matter to residents of the City of Buffalo.

This event supports the work of the newly forming FPC of Buffalo and Erie County. The FPC was created in
May 2013 as a subcommission of the Erie County Board of Health and acts as an advisory body to provide
expert guidance on policies that could improve the local food system. It is a pivotal time for food work in
Buffalo: the Buffalo Green Code overhauls Buffalo's land-use plan and 60-year-old zoning ordinance? the
Western New York Regional Economic Development Council has recognized food systems strategies as
key economic development priorities for the region? and the One Region Forward regional planning initiative
is working to produce a detailed food access plan for Erie and Niagara counties.

The Public Forum and Info Fair is part of the second Buffalo Food Policy Summit that brings together diverse
stakeholders to discuss opportunities for sustainable economic development through the food system in
support of a healthier, more resilient Western New York. We have a great opportunity to push for land use and
economic development policies that support a healthful regional food system. Policymakers and residents
will now have someone to turn to for sound counsel regarding food policy issues.

Year of the Teacher Lecture: 'The Changing Same: The Brown Decision Sixty Years Later' October 23

Posted:

The Higher Education Administration Department and the Equity and Campus Diversity Office welcome Waldo E. Martin Jr., the Alexander F. and May T. Morrison Professor of American History and American Citizenship at the University of California at Berkeley, who will present “The Changing Same: The Brown Decision Sixty Years Later” on Wednesday, October 23, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Bacon Hall 117.

The academic year 2013–2014 celebrates “The Year of the Teacher” at Buffalo State. In commemoration of this event, Martin, author of Brown v. Board of Education: A Brief History with Documents, will discuss this momentous decision, its impact, and the challenges that remain.

The impact of this historic decision has been wide-ranging and profound. Not only did it open the doors to educational opportunities for black Americans in this nation, but it also opened the gates for equal educational opportunities for all. Despite the decision’s profound impact, in 2013, we see many of its goals of providing equal educational opportunities being erased.

Martin will also be available to sign several of his publications following his talk.
