Grant Street Global Voices Mural Unveiling

Posted:

Please join us on Thursday, October 10, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. to celebrate the unveiling of the Grant Street Global Voices community mural, painted by Augustina Droze, which reflects the lives of West Side residents. The event will take place at 185 Grant Street (at Auburn Avenue), where the 32-by-80-foot mural is located on the south wall of Lorigo’s Meating Place. A reception will be held at the West Side Bazaar, 25 Grant Street, following speeches recognizing the contributors to this community-wide project.

Young Audiences of Western New York and Buffalo State led over 100 musical, visual, and literary arts workshops at Lafayette High School, International School 45, the Buffalo State Community Academic Center, the WASH Project, and the Niagara Branch Library to create designs that Droze incorporated into the mural. The mural celebrates the diversity and vitality of the neighborhood and businesses of the West Side.

For more information, visit the Grant Street Global Voices Facebook page.

Tobacco-Free Campus: Open Forums

Posted:

The re-launch of Buffalo State’s tobacco-free campus policy will begin Monday, November 18. Buffalo State adopted a tobacco-free campus policy at the request of the College Senate, effective with the start of the 2011–2012 academic year. Since then, advertising, informational tables, and meetings with constituent groups have helped create awareness of the policy; however, progress on the tobacco-free campaign was delayed pending authorization from the statewide leadership of employee collective bargaining units to participate in planning efforts aimed at making Buffalo State a tobacco-free campus. That authorization was received late last spring, allowing full implementation of the campaign to begin in fall 2013.

You can help. Attend any of the tobacco-free campus open forums listed below or volunteer to be a “tobacco-free ambassador.”

Tobacco-Free Campus Open Forums
Open to the campus community—with a special focus on those who use tobacco—the open forums will provide a time to learn about the tobacco-free policy and to consider ways to create a campus culture in which all members are treated with dignity and respect while supporting a healthful living, learning, and working environment.

Open Forum 1: Thursday, October 10
    12:15–1:30 p.m. (Bengal Pause)
    Bulger Communication Center South

Open Forum 2: Wednesday, October 16
    3:00–4:30 p.m.
    Bulger Communication Center South

Open Forum 3: Tuesday, October 29
    4:00–5:30 p.m.
    E. H. Butler Library 210

Tobacco-Free Ambassadors
Tobacco-free ambassadors will help promote the tobacco-free policy by taking an active role in informing people that a tobacco-free policy is in effect. A large majority of Buffalo State students and employees support a tobacco-free environment, so we are inviting volunteers to be trained in effective ways to speak up when they see tobacco being used. To volunteer, call the Health Promotions office at ext. 4719 or sign up online. You will be notified once the training sessions have been scheduled.

For more information about the tobacco-free campus campaign, contact Charles B. Kenyon, associate vice president and dean of students, ext. 4618.
