Using Predictive Analytics for Student Course Selection (Face-to-Face Workshop)

The SUNY Center for Professional Development is pleased to offer the workshop "Using Predictive Analytics for Student Course Selection" on Friday, April 25, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the SUNY Institute of Technology (SUNY IT) in Utica, New York.

Held in support of the SUNY FACT² Task Group on Learning Analytics, the workshop will be facilitated by Ron Sarner, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor of computer science at SUNY IT. It will provide a hands-on introduction to predictive analytics using decision trees to identify characteristics that differentiate between students who succeed in a course and those who do not. The workshop will provide an explanation of how decision trees work, data and software requirements, using SPSS decision trees, and interpretation of results. Bring your own data and work with facilitators one on one.

Please join the Fashion and Textile Technology Department in welcoming Ed Gribbin, president of Alvanon, to campus today, April 22, for the presentation "Why Fashion Fits (When It Does)...and What to Do When It Doesn't: A Look behind the Curtain, from the Catwalk to 7th Avenue to L.A. and to Your Closet" from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Technology Building 358.

Alvanon, a leader in the apparel industry on the fit and sizing of clothing, revolutionized dress forms by creating the first forms based on 3-D scanning data. Gribbin leads Alvanon teams around the globe, helping fashion industry clients optimize their fit, sizing, and product development strategies. He is widely recognized as the world’s leading authority on sizing and product development strategies. Gribbin also serves numerous global organizations dedicated to the success of the retail, apparel, and textile sectors.

Gribbin joined Alvanon in 2006 to launch the Alva Insight strategic consulting division. Before working for Alvanon, he served as president of Intellifit Corporation, where he co-invented the revolutionary Intellifit body scanner. As senior vice president at Angelica Corporation, Gribbin managed sales, marketing, design, and production for one of the largest corporate-wear companies in the United States.

Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program Honors Convocation

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program will celebrate the exemplary academic performance of its outstanding students at the annual Honors Convocation on Thursday, May 8, at 3:30 p.m. in Rockwell Hall Auditorium. This year's theme is "Imagine, Believe, Achieve: Because of Buffalo State EOP, I Am Paying It Forward.”

The program will start with a solo inspirational performance by local artist Drea D'Nur. Highlights of the program include the presentation of special awards to students, staff, and faculty. A Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to Debra Vizzi, Ph.D., Class of 1981. Recognition is given to students who have obtained a 3.0 semester or cumulative GPA during the 2013 calendar year. The 16th annual Student Research and Creativity Celebration (SRCC) will take place Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3. The full program, including the final schedule, is now available online and on the Undergraduate Research website.

SRCC participants: Information about printing posters using the "Early Bird" special can also be found on our site. There are more templates than ever to help students design professional-looking large-format posters. The printing discount expires at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 23.
