Tell Students: Dr. Aaron Podolefsky AmeriCorps Fellowship Programs

Posted:

The Dr. Podolefsky AmeriCorps Fellowship programs are currently accepting applications for two different terms of service: summer 2014–fall 2014 or fall 2014–spring 2015. The fellowship programs offer unique opportunities for students to gain valuable experience working with children and youth. Fellows work in collaboration with school and community partners to provide academic enrichment and tutoring to K–12 students and young adults through summer and after-school programs.

Fellows also receive course credit and a monetary education award that they can apply toward educational expenses as recognition for their service. The service commitment and monetary award vary depending on the fellowship program: $1,175 for 300 hours of service; $2,114 for 675 hours of service. The 675-hour positions are restricted to education majors who will be student teaching in the second semester of their term of service to fulfill service hours.

Finally, fellows may have the opportunity to be employed by community partner organizations.

The Dr. Podolefsky AmeriCorps Fellows programs have been made possible through the generous support of Eleanore Woods Beals, ’50, and Vaughn Beals.

For more information or an application, please contact Diane Mercuri or Gina Pannozzo, Ph.D., in the CEURE office, Caudell Hall 107, ext. 3610.

Applications may be completed online. Links to the application can also be found on the following websites:

French Film and Lecture: 'Liaisons Dangereuses'

Posted:

The Alliance Française and the Modern and Classical Languages Department at Buffalo State will present the lecture “Libertinage and Politics in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Choderlos de Laclos’ Cultural Icon” by Rafika Merini, associate professor, on Wednesday, April 30, at 7:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication East. The lecture will be followed by a viewing of excerpts of three screen adaptations of the famous epistolary novel and a discussion. All adaptations will be shown in French with English subtitles.

Dangerous Liaisons is "the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction and power as weapons to humiliate and degrade others, all the while enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. It has been claimed to depict the decadence of the French aristocracy shortly before the French Revolution, thereby exposing the perversions of the so-called Ancien Régime.... The Vicomte de Valmont is determined to seduce the virtuous, married, and therefore inaccessible Madame de Tourvel. At the same time, the Marquise de Merteuil is determined to corrupt the young Cécile de Volanges, in an act of revenge on her previous lover, who has rudely discarded her. Cécile falls in love with the her young music tutor, and Merteuil and Valmont pretend to help the secret lovers in order to gain their trust and use them later in their own schemes." (Source: Wikipedia) The rest to follow!

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Contact Maggie Roston, lecturer in the Modern and Classical Languages Department, with questions.

Intellectual Foundations Website: IF Waiver and IF 2014 Fact Sheets

Posted:

IF waiver fact sheets (PDF) can be found on the Intellectual Foundations website. The IF program that was implemented in fall 2006 remains the general education program for undergraduate students entering Buffalo State who began college as freshmen (anywhere) on or after fall 2006 up to spring 2014. Students graduating in December 2014 or later will receive the IF waiver. The 3-credit Technology and Society requirement is waived. Three credits in each of the four cognate areas (Arts, Humanities, Natural Science, and Social Science) are waived. All other degree requirements for current students remain in effect for December 2014 graduation or later. These waivers are in addition to the previously granted waiver of BSC 101/301 for all students under the current Intellectual Foundations program. Students do not need to apply for the waiver. IF waivers will be reflected in Degree Works after summer 2014 graduate degrees are awarded in September 2014.

More information about IF 2014 is available on the Intellectual Foundations website.

Spring 2014 Chemistry-Physics Seminar: 'Single Molecule Tracking for Investigation of Cylindrical Microdomain Alignment and Molecular Diffusion in Diblock Copolymer Films'

Posted:

Takashi Ito, associate professor of chemistry at Kansas State University, will present his research talk "Single Molecule Tracking for Investigation of Cylindrical Microdomain Alignment and Molecular Diffusion in Diblock Copolymer Films" at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in Science Building 272. An abstract of his talk appears below.

Before his presentation, from 9:30 to 10:20 a.m., Ito will converse with undergraduate and graduate students at Buffalo State regarding the graduate program at Kansas State University and his science career. This private conversation will be held in Science and Mathematics Complex 201.

Abstract
In this presentation, I will talk about the principles and applications of single-molecule tracking (SMT), measurements of the trajectories of single fluorescent molecules using wide-field fluorescence microscopy. At the beginning, I will review basic issues behind fluorescence measurements, and summarize motivations and challenges in single molecule observation using fluorescence techniques. Subsequently, I will show how to apply SMT for characterizing nanostructured materials, specifically cylinder-forming block copolymer films. By tracking the diffusional motion of individual fluorescent molecules that preferentially partition into the cylindrical microdomains, we can quantitatively assess the extent of order and alignment of the microdomains as well as their diameters. In addition, SMT can be used to measure molecular diffusion at local regions, permitting us to obtain detailed information on the structural and chemical heterogeneity that cannot be obtained using ensemble measurements.

This seminar is sponsored by the Auxiliary Services Grant Allocation Committee, the Vice President for Student Affairs Office, and the Faculty-Student Association.
