Mental Health Awareness Week Starts Today

Posted:

The Counseling Center will collaborate with several campus departments to host the seventh annual Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) from Tuesday, September 8, to Saturday, September 12.

The intention of Buffalo State Mental Health Awareness Week is to get the campus community talking openly about the issues that surround mental health and mental illness and to raise awareness of the issues people face. It is also a time to get people thinking about their own mental well-being and reaching out to others. Connecting with others, positively engaging with our community, looking out for each other, and being compassionate toward others and toward ourselves makes a big difference in the quality of our mental health.

To this end, various activities will be offered during the week, including tabling and presentations in the Campbell Student Union each day, a display about QPR (question-persuade-refer) for suicide prevention, learning about SafeZone, LGBT ally training, therapy dogs' impact on mental health, Evergreen LGBT health services, poignant speakers discussing their own experiences with mental illness, yoga for slowing down our mind and tuning into our bodies, and expressive writing learning experiences.

Buffalo State will join Buffalo community members in a Suicide Prevention Walk, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, on Saturday, September 12. These events are free and open to all students, staff, and faculty. For more information, please visit the Counseling Center website or contact Suzanne Johnson, senior counselor.
