Biology Seminar - 'Reproductive Aging in Non-human Primates: Lessons Learned from Aging Zoo Populations' - April 15

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department for the seminar "Reproductive Aging in Non-human Primates: Lessons Learned from Aging Zoo Populations," presented by Susan Margulis, associate professor of biology at Canisius College, on Friday, April 15, at 2:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center East. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome.

Seminar Abstract
Examining life history parameters in long-lived species presents many challenges, particularly if one is studying wild populations. Zoos offer unprecedented access to populations of long-lived species. Not only do animals tend to live long lives in zoos (often attaining ages that would be unlikely in the wild), but zoos also maintain detailed histories on individuals. My research capitalizes on these rich sources of data by examining patterns of reproductive aging in zoo-housed gorillas. By combining non-invasive hormonal measurements, behavioral observation, and assessment of post-mortem records, my collaborators and I have explored patterns of reproductive aging and identified reproductive termination ("menopause") in zoo-housed gorillas. Longitudinal assessment and (eventually) analysis of necropsy records have further identified the ways in which reproductive aging in gorillas mirrors patterns observed in humans. While there are some notable differences, the changes in reproductive function in female gorillas are similar to those seen in human females.

'3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets' - A Beyond Boundaries: Dare to Be Diverse Film and Discussion Presentation - February 18

Posted:

From the Diversity Program Coordinator
Please join the Equity and Campus Diversity Office for a screening of 3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets, a 2015 award-winning documentary, on Thursday, February 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center's Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium. The film is free and open to the public and will be followed by a panel discussion.

In 3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets, lives intersect and are forever altered. On Black Friday 2012, two cars parked next to each other at a Florida gas station. A white middle-aged man and a black teenager argued over the volume of the music in the boy’s car. After an exchange of angry words, the man, Michael Dunn, fired 10 bullets at the car full of teens and then fled. Three of those bullets hit 17-year-old Jordan Davis, who died at the scene. Arrested the next day, Dunn claimed he shot in self-defense. Thus began the long journey of unraveling the truth. 3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets follows that journey, reconstructing the night of the murder and revealing how hidden racial prejudice can result in tragedy.

Directed by Marc Silver, the film won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Social Impact at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

For more information about the Beyond Boundaries: Dare to Be Diverse Film and Discussion Series, please visit the Equity and Campus Diversity website. This event is sponsored in collaboration with the Buffalo State Communication Department and the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
