Tell Students: I Love Consent Workshop - April 13

Weigel Health Promotions will host an I Love Consent workshop on Wednesday, April 13, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in Bacon Hall 211 in preparation for Take Back the Night. Take Back the Night will also be held on April 13, in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall; doors open at 6:30 p.m. The I Love Consent workshop will discuss the importance of gaining consent for all sex acts, what consent is and is not, and the changes in the SUNY policy on sexual assault. Watch this video for a brief introduction to the topic.

Lecture - 'Imagining Mattering: Hip-Hop Civics Ed, Intersectionality, and Black Joy' - April 28

Bettina Love, associate professor in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice at the University of Georgia, will present "Imagining Mattering: Hip-Hop Civics Ed, Intersectionality, and Black Joy" on Thursday, April 28, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center South. This event is part of the Black Cross Project at Buffalo State, which promotes conversations on racial and social justice.

Love is an award-winning author whose research focuses on urban youth and their efforts to use hip-hop music and culture to negotiate complex social, cultural, and political phenomena. Recently, Love was named the Nasir Jones Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute at Harvard University. She possesses a broad research agenda that encompasses hip-hop culture, black feminism, queer youth, and race and equity in education.

All faculty, staff, students, and community members are invited to the lecture and the Q&A session that follows. This event is made possible by sponsorship provided by the Grant Allocation Committee, the Faculty-Student Association, the Equity and Campus Diversity Minigrant Program, and the Woods-Beals Endowment.

Lecture - 'Diversity Is Not Enough: A Fantastic Voyage through the Language of Racial Inequality' - April 6

As part of the Black Cross Project at Buffalo State, Zandria Robinson, assistant professor of anthropology and sociology at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, will present "Diversity Is Not Enough: A Fantastic Voyage through the Language of Racial Inequality" on Wednesday, April 6, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center South. Robinson is a well-known scholar and author whose interests lie within gender studies, critical race theory, and social movements. Her recent publications include This Ain’t Chicago: Race, Class, and Regional Identity in the Post-Soul South (University of North Carolina Press, 2014) and Repositioning Race: Prophetic Research in a Post-Obama Age (SUNY Press, 2014).

All faculty, staff, students, and community members are invited to the lecture and the Q&A session that follows. 'The War on Science' - April 16

Buffalo State welcomes Shawn Otto, novelist, screenwriter, and cofounder and chair of sciencedebate.org, who will speak on his latest book, The War On Science: Who’s Waging It, Why It Matters, What We Can Do About It, on Saturday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center's Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium.

One of the foremost writers on science and public policy, Otto is also a filmmaker best known for writing and co-producing the Oscar-nominated film House of Sand and Fog. He lives in Minnesota, in a passive solar, geothermal, wind-powered home he designed and built with his own hands. All are welcome—especially students and teachers. This is a great opportunity to hear from one of the greatest supporters of science in our time. The event is free, but seating is limited. Registration is required.

This event is sponsored by the School of Education, the School of Natural and Social Sciences, the Master Teacher Program, and the Grant Allocation Committee.

Sexual Assault 101 with Crisis Services: April 6

Weigel Health Promotions will host Erie County Crisis Services for a discussion about sexual assault on Wednesday, April 6, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in Bacon Hall 115, in advance of the annual Take Back the Night event on April 13. The presentation will discuss information about sexual violence and how the Buffalo State community can work together to prevent such tragedies.

Blackboard Collaborate Upgrade: May 13

Blackboard Collaborate, the campus supported web-conferencing application, will be upgraded to the newest version, Collaborate Ultra, on Friday, May 13. This new version provides a “fully redesigned, high quality, browser-based web conferencing solution that makes distance teaching and learning simple, crystal clear, and worry free.”

If you plan to use Collaborate Ultra in a future semester, please register for an upcoming workshop through the CyberQuad Workshop Registration website.
