'Deconstruct to Construct: Experimenting with Transforming Paper' - October 29

Posted:

The Burchfield Penney Art Center will host the workshop "Deconstruct to Construct: Experimenting with Transforming Paper" with Jozef Bajus, associate professor of design, on Saturday, October 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Jozef Bajus takes discarded materials and creates beauty from them. The workshop will use participants' unwanted watercolors, the ones that don’t resonate with them anymore. The recycled watercolor paintings will be cut, torn, folded, woven, layered, and transformed into a new work of art. "Deconstruct to Construct" is open to any level participant, from beginner to professional artist.

Mr. Bajus is the coordinator of the fiber design program at Buffalo State. He received his M.F.A. from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia. Over the past 10 years, he has taught numerous fiber and mixed media workshops at various schools of art and craft in the United States: Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and the Split Rock Arts Program. He was a visiting scholar at Kanazawa College of Art in Japan and was invited to teach fiber classes at Jiaxing University in China. In 2013 and 2014, he held a major solo exhibition, Long Distance Calls, at two galleries in Slovakia, as well as the solo exhibition Lendfield at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo in 2014. Mr. Bajus received the Langley H. Kenzie Award in 2016 and earned a solo exhibition at Burchfield Penney Art Center.

This event is part of the International Center for Watercolor Artist Inspiration Series. The cost is $36 for Burchfield Penney members and Buffalo State faculty, staff, and students; and $46 for not-yet members. For more information, including a supply list, please visit the Burchfield Penney website or contact Kathy Gaye Shiroki, curator of museum learning and community engagement, 878-3549.

Investigating the Impact of Machines on Natural Landscapes: October 15

Posted:

The Burchfield Penney Art Center will host the workshop "Investigating the Impact of Machines on Natural Landscapes" with photographer Viktoria Ciostek, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Participants will engage with Ms. Ciostek in discussing the impact of man and machines on natural landscapes. Following a brief presentation of her photography and its relationship to Charles Burchfield's work, participants will partake in a hands-on watercolor project involving the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s current exhibition Blistering Vision: Charles E. Burchfield’s Sublime American Landscape.

"Incongruous manmade objects in natural environments are subjects I use as windows to view larger industrial systems at play," Ms. Ciostek said. "It is my intention to raise awareness toward our industrial practices, the natural habitats they alter, and the need for responsible human stewardship over the resources and land we depend upon."

This workshop is part of the International Center for Watercolor Artist Inspiration Series. The cost of the workshop is $36 for members and Buffalo State faculty, staff, and students; $46 for not-yet members.
