Free Drop-In Bookmaking Workshop - September 15

The Western New York Book Arts Center will host a free hands-on drop-in workshop on Thursday, September 15, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Czurles-Nelson Galleryn Upton Hall.

Drop-in to create a hand-stitched sketchbook with the Western New York Book Arts Center using off-cuts from their letterpress and screen print make-ready poster collection. Learn the basics of bookbinding and familiarize yourself with the tools necessary to create handmade books.

Tell Students: Alternative Break Information Sessions - September 21, October 5

Students are invited to attend one of two information sessions about the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center's Alternative Break program to learn specific details about the upcoming 2016–2017 trip experiences: Alternative Winter Break, It Takes a Village: Equity, Education, and Poverty-Alleviation in Cleveland, Ohio; and Alternative February Break, Building an Inclusive "Buffalo Renaissance." 

The following information sessions will be held:

  • Wednesday, September 21, 12:30–1:30 p.m., Cleveland Hall 306
  • Wednesday, October 5, 4:30–5:30 p.m., Bacon Hall 205

?Students can find basic information about both trip experiences on the VSLC website, but the information session will give them details about the nonprofit organizations and their service projects, lodging accommodations, transportation logistics, and more. Information about the application process, fundraising and scholarship opportunities, and pre-trip orientation meetings will also be discussed by the student site leaders coordinating the trip experiences.

Beyond Boundaries Presents 'Do Not Resist' - September 15

Do Not Resist,
a new documentary on the rapid militarization of U.S. police forces, will kick off the fall 2016 semester of Buffalo State's Beyond Boundaries: Dare to Be Diverse screening and discussion series on Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m. in Burchfield Penney Art Center.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Anthony Neal, associate professor of political science, Buffalo State; Michael Niman, professor of communication, Buffalo State, and ?John Elmore, Esq., the Law Offices of Steve Boyd. The event is free and open to the public.

Winner of the Best Documentary award at the Tribeca Film Festival, Do Not Resist was filmed in 11 states over a period of two years. Director Craig Atkinson delivers a gripping and at times terrifying exploration of how rapid militarization has transformed contemporary police culture.

Conversations in and out of the Disciplines - 'Coursework to Practice: Au-some Experiences in Community-Based Learning' - October 21

The fall 2016 Conversations in and Out of the Disciplines Series begins Friday, October 21, when Kathy Doody, assistant professor of exceptional education, presents “Coursework to Practice: Au-some Experiences in Community-Based Learning” at 3:00 in Ketchum Hall 320. A Q&A and short wine-and-cheese reception will follow the talk. Everyone is welcome.

Please also mark your calendars for the next talk of the semester: Ann Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor of English, will present “Recollecting the Future: Poland, Ukraine, and Coleridge” on Friday, November 18.

And stay tuned for more information about our upcoming talk by Ted Schmidt, associate professor of economics and finance, on December 2, as well as next semester's talks by Ann Emo, chair and associate professor of theater; Robert Warren, associate professor of biology; and Cynthia Conides, associate professor of history and social studies education.

Join Our Team: The New York State University Police Are Hiring

The Buffalo State University Police Department would like to inform you of an opportunity to learn about the upcoming University Police Officer Examination. The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) has partnered with the University at Buffalo and the Buffalo State University Police Departments to offer information sessions on the University Police Officer Examination Preparation Classes that will be held to assist those interested in taking the exam. The information sessions will include EOC faculty members who will discuss how the prep classes can assist those interested in taking the exam, University Police officers who will discuss the details of the job, and EOC Admissions staff members who will discuss how to apply for the EOC and the prep classes. Everyone is welcome to attend the following information sessions, which will be held at both the University at Buffalo EOC (UB EOC) and Buffalo State College:

Survive and Thrive: Essentials for Starting Your Own Business - September 20

The Small Business Development Center presents “Survive and Thrive: Essentials for Starting Your Own Business,” a workshop covering all the essential information needed to start a business, on Tuesday, September 20, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Burchfield Penney Art Center (second floor). Specific topics will include creating a business plan; competition analysis; and tax, legal, and insurance issues. The workshop is free for Buffalo State faculty, staff, students, and alumni as well as U.S. military veterans, and $20 for all others.

Registration will take place immediately before the workshop, from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. To register in advance, please call the SBDC at 878-4030.

The Small Business Development Center is pleased to present Social Enterprise 101, a workshop for entrepreneurs seeking to directly address social and environmental problems through their businesses, on Friday, September 23, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in Cleveland Hall 205. The workshop will introduce participants to the SBDC's Social Enterprise Center and to the following four areas of training: social business planning; legal form for social entrepreneurs, the benefit corporation; social impact measurement and reporting; and financing your social enterprise. Tell Students: McNair Scholars Program Recruitment

The McNair Scholars Program at Buffalo State is seeking high-achieving undergraduate students from all majors, especially from the STEM fields. The program prepares students for graduate study through a variety of scholarly and research activities. Please inform any student you feel qualifies for this program.
