Students from the museum studies class Exhibit Design and Interpretation have installed the exhibition Buffalo's World War I Experience: Portraits from the Howard D. Beach Photography Collection in Butler Library. A reception will be held today, May 3, from noon to 2:00 p.m. near the Circulation Desk. The exhibit was funded by a Faculty-Student Association Founders Grant; images and artifacts courtesy of the Buffalo History Museum.

Blackboard Training: Professional Workshops for May

The following Blackboard professional development workshops will be held in May:

Detailed descriptions of each training session (PDF, 66 KB) are available on the RITE website. All sessions will be held in Bulger Communication Center 122 or in an online webinar format. Workshops can be taken independently or as part of the Blackboard Specialization Certificate series.

All workshops are suitable for instructors teaching face-to-face, hybrid, or online courses. All workshop presentations will be one hour and are limited to 10 participants. The instructor will be available for an additional 30 minutes after the workshop for questions and discussions (optional).

Today: Commencement Volunteer Usher Registration Deadline

All online registrations for Commencement volunteer ushers are due today, May 1. Thank you to all who have already registered to greet and assist graduates and their families on this most auspicious occasion. Additional volunteer ushers are needed and welcome to register. As a reminder, the 145th Commencement is Saturday, May 13, in the Sports Arena, with ceremonies at the following times:

  • 9:00 a.m. Baccalaureate Ceremony: celebrating the School of Education, the School of the Professions, and University College
  • 1:00 p.m. Baccalaureate Ceremony: celebrating the School of Arts and Humanities and the School of Natural and Social Sciences
  • 5:00 p.m. Master's Hooding and C.A.S. Ceremony: celebrating the Graduate School

Beginning Tuesday, May 2, any additional volunteer usher registrations or amendments to existing registrations should be forwarded via e-mail to Marybeth Wojtaszek in the Events Management Office.

An informative and required rehearsal for volunteer ushers is scheduled for Thursday, May 11, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Sports Arena, where duties and specific roles will be discussed.

In addition, the Professional Development Office is offering a Campus Event Volunteer Training on Tuesday, May 2, during Bengal Pause in Butler Library 208. This training, while not required, is ideal for people who volunteer at large-scale events like Commencement and Convocation. Participants will learn the skills necessary to be effective college representatives and that are applicable to many aspects of campus work. Rescheduled: Emergency Response Training Exercise - Automobile Accident Drill: May 2

Members of the Buffalo State Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will conduct an emergency drill simulating an automobile accident on Tuesday, May 2, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in Lot G-21 (campus map, PDF 3.2 MB).

You may see emergency actions and observe actors portraying victims and rescuers near Grant Street. Do not be alarmed. This is a simulated event. The goal of this exercise is to train CERT members in the event of an incident where a vehicle would strike a crowd of people. We are fortunate to have volunteer CERT members on campus, an ongoing partnership with police, and a continually updated and tested Emergency Response Plan.

Tell Students: Citation Station Wednesday - May 3

The Writing Help Center and Butler Library have teamed up to offer students a drop-in Citation Station to help with APA, MLA, or Chicago Manual of Style citation question on Wednesday, May 3, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. outside the Writing Help Center in Butler Library. In addition to the Help Center’s regularly scheduled tutoring services, extra staff members, writing tutors, and librarians will be available during Citation Station hours.

EOP Honors Convocation: May 4

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program will celebrate the academic performance of its exemplary students at the 50th Anniversary Honors Convocation on Thursday, May 4, at 3:30 p.m. in Rockwell Hall Auditorium. This year's theme is Imagine, Believe, Achieve: #BecauseofBuffaloStateEOP, the Legacy Continues….

The program will begin with a celebratory performance by theater and dance students, choreographed by Naila Ansari, lecturer of theater. Highlights include the presentation of special awards to students, staff, and faculty. A Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to Miguel Calderon, '75, managing director with J. P. Morgan. Recognition is given to students who have obtained a 3.0 semester or cumulative GPA during the 2016 calendar year. In addition, we will be selling T- shirts to raise funds for the EOP Jaelah Yannis Jenkins fund. The campus community is invited to attend and stay for a wonderfully catered reception.

Thank you to all who are preparing to march and have already registered to celebrate and recognize the achievements of the Class of 2017. Additional faculty and professional staff marchers are still needed and are welcome to register. As a reminder, the 145th Commencement is Saturday, May 13, in the Sports Arena, with ceremonies at the following times:

  • 9:00 a.m. Baccalaureate Ceremony: celebrating the School of Education, the School of the Professions, and University College
  • 1:00 p.m. Baccalaureate Ceremony: celebrating the School of Arts and Humanities and the School of Natural and Social Sciences

Regarding regalia: The deadline has passed for regalia rental orders with guaranteed hood colors and standard charges. Please contact the bookstore for the possibility of rush orders. Also, a limited number of doctoral gowns in various sizes are available for loan through the Academic Affairs Office on a first-come, first-served basis. Marchers should provide their own caps and hoods, though a limited number of caps and a few various hoods are also available. E-mail Patricia Alessandra to inquire about gown loans.

Information Security Awareness: Please Complete SANS Training

As of Monday, 399 individuals selected to complete SANS training have not started training. One hundred seventy-nine individuals have completed SANS training, and their feedback indicates that participants are learning something new from the training. Participants also indicate that they are happy they were selected to receive this training. Reminder e-mails have been sent to inactive participants.
