New Senator Orientation: September 6

The College Senate will hold its annual New Senator Orientation for all newly elected senators on Thursday, September 6, during Bengal Pause in the Carmine A. Grande Room, Cleveland Hall 418. This informal session, hosted by the Senate chair and parliamentarian, gives newly elected faculty, professional staff, and students the basic protocol on Senate meeting etiquette. The College Senate follows Robert’s Rules of Order as is mandated by its bylaws. Attendance is not mandatory but is strongly encouraged. Please e-mail Vincent Masci, assistant to the College Senate, or phone the office at 878-5139 with questions.

College Senate meetings will be held in Bulger Communication Center 214 beginning in fall 2018, as Butler Library 210 undergoes extensive renovations. The meeting schedule for the 2018–2019 academic year will be posted on the Senate website.

If you are interested in serving on one or more of the eight College Senate standing committees for 2018–2019, please complete and submit the Standing Committee Interest Form (doc) by tomorrow, August 10. Committee membership is determined solely at the discretion of committee chairs. Not all committees may need members. Please submit forms by campus mail or e-mail to Vincent Masci, assistant to the College Senate, Cleveland Hall 211. Please contact the Senate office with questions by e-mail or phone at 878-5319.

In Memoriam: James R. Gillham

The Buffalo State community is saddened by the death of James R. Gillham, professor emeritus of criminal justice, who died August 6, 2018. Dr. Gillham joined the Buffalo State community in 1977 and retired in 2018. He is survived by his wife, Darlene. The family will be present on Friday, August 10, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Greco Funeral Home, 2909 Elmwood Avenue, Kenmore, NY 14217. Services will be held Saturday, August 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the New Covenant Church, 345 McConkey Dr., Tonawanda, NY 14223. Additional information is available online.

Submit Awards, Grants for Faculty and Staff Recognition Ceremony

Have you been recognized this year by a state or national organization for your outstanding scholarship or professional or volunteer service? Have you or you and your colleagues received a sizeable grant? We would like to know.

Faculty and staff members who received significatnts awards and grants from September 1, 2017, through August 31, 2018, are invited to submit their information for potential print in the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Ceremony program. Awards and grants meeting the following criteria may be listed in the program distributed at the ceremony:

Criteria for Awards

  • Yes: Recognized by academic, professional, or service organizations at the international, national, or state levels.
  • Yes: Awards; senior officer elections to statewide, national, international organizations; juried competitions; Fulbright Scholarships; etc.
  • No: Buffalo State College, WNY, or local organizations or chapters.
  • No: Book, chapters, editorials, journal publications, etc.

Criteria for Grants Received

  • Yes: $50,000 and above.
  • No: Less than $50,000.
  • Yes: Received as an individual or received as a group.

Additionally, new faculty and staff members who received SUNY awards such as the Chancellor's Award for Excellence or Distinguished Professorships while serving at other SUNY institutions at any time during their careers may submit that information. Also, the names of newly hired faculty and staff—initially hired September 1, 2017, through August 31, 2018—will be included in the program. The deadline for submiting information for all categories using the online forms is Wednesday, September 5.

The ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 4, at 12:15 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall with a reception immediately following. The campus community is invited to attend. Please e-mail Patricia Alessandra, commencement director for academics, with any questions about submitting award or grant information. SUNY awards and new hires for 2018 are automatically included in the program and do not need to be submitted.

Interruption to Tower Road: August 10

Blackboard Learn Unavailable August 16

Buffalo State’s Blackboard Learn environment will be unavailable to faculty, staff, and students from 3:00 to 7:00 a.m. Thursday, August 16, as the system migrates from its current web host, SUNY ITEC-Buffalo State, to the SUNY ITEC-Victory Technology Center (VTC). Once the system is available, Blackboard Learn users may need to clear their cache and restart their browsers. Users who continue to experience issues when the site becomes available should open a ticket with Open SUNY Support Services Help Desk or call (844) 673-6786.
